Then, put two wins in a row on consecutive nights and you have the picture of our Warrior basketball team. The boys were off to a losing start as they faded and lost good leads. On Friday night the home crowd saw the Warriors grind away to a 60-53 win over North Chicago. Wayne Hiller sparked the team in this game not only with his scoring! but also with a terrific drive Mid spirit. And Coach Fulton found strength on his bench, giving him a chance to shuffle around with different combinations. Fulton always liked balanced scoring on his teams, but it was watching those big, rugged fellows (Myron Bentz and Ken Lawrence) clear the boards that put a smile on his face Friday night. Warriors Take Thriller 62-61 At Libertyville As Soda Shows Mettle We said last week there was nothing wrong with this team that a win wouldn't cure. On Saturday night the Fulton boys won what must rate as one of the most exciting games of all times. We were unable to attend the game at Libertyville, but enjoyed the broadcast on WKRS on Sunday morning. The station has a couple of high class young gentlemen handling the job. It is a popular service. We knew McHenry had won the game, but that broadcast carried us along with the thought that it wasn't true until the very last. Tremendous pressure was on Rich Soda as he put through two free throws after time ran out to win the game. Those two victories put the Warriors right back in the running where they belong. We know a gal who bought wall paper for the kitchen as a Christmas gift for her husband-- then had him put it on the wall on his day off last week. They want one and all to attend a pancake breakfast in the Johnsburg Community hall next Sunday morning starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. The pancakes will be flipped to raise funds for the Johnsburg Forester basketball team. We were there last year and found the breakfast real good. Give 'em a chance to serve you. The Foresters have shown signs of missing the high scoring of Bill Oeffling who is out an injury. You can't lose a player of Bill's ability without being hurt. The time has come to warn our wives that snow shoveling is very dangerous for men. The old ticker, you know! Clippings from newspapers, telling of heart attacks, has worked for us for quite a few years. Of course, you have to point out to the little woman that you really love to shovel snow, but-- We were proud to read Sunday that Mike Pitzen was one of 80 young men chosen in the greater Chicago area as a candidate for the Notre Dame Club of Chicago's Knute Rock- He award. Choices are based on scholarship, leadership and ath- In an amazing finish Saturday night at Libertyville, Rich Soda, who has had his moments of glory as a Warrior athlete, dropped in a pair of free throws after the game had ended to enable McHenry to edge coach Larry Leon's Cats by the razor thin margin of one point, 62-61. The entire Warrior squad, coach Fulton and numerous well wishers literally jumped on the 6' blond in a wild display of happiness just after the second free throw hit the front of the rim, bounced to the rear of the basket and then fell through the hoop to give the Warriors the tremendous vie tory. In the closing seconds of the game Wayne Hiller tied up guard Gary Jones of the Cats as Jones looked frantically for an official to call time out. In a blur, Hiller moved around Jones to create the jump ball situation. With 11 seconds showing on the clock, Hiller won the tap and the Warriors moved the ball into Roy Moss who took what appeared to be the final shot of the game. However, the ball slid off the rim and was grabbed by Soda who dribbled out of the congestion to the right side, turned and was fouled by Mike Dahl as he shot and the time ran out. Close All The Way The game was evenly contested all the way with neither team ahead by more than five points at any one time. The Warriors were ahead briefly 6-2, but the Cats rallied behind Dahl to take a 13-11 first quarter lead. Bentz, Soda and Moss moved the Warriors ahead by halftime 30-25. Dahl, 6'5" Libertyville center, who had scored 47 points against Crystal Lake Friday night, started his productive second half effort with eight points in the third period as Libertyville pulled into a 42- 42 tie by the end of the period. Dahl led all scorers in the final tabulations with 25. The Warriors had balanced scoring as has been their pattern so far this year. Soda had 16 points, Bentz 15, Laurence 13 and Roy Moss 10. A balanced Warrior attack in the first quarter gave the Warriors a 14-13 advantage. However, a free throw by Vernon Jones and a two pointer by 6'3" center Jim Spriggs from the top of the circle put North Chicago out in front in the first minute of the second stanza. From that point the Warhawks built up a 32-28 halftime margin. Wayne Hiller and Myron Bentz combined their efforts to push the Warriors into a 44-42 lead at the end of three periods. Bentz and Ken Laurence completely dominated the boards in the quarter as the Warriors forged ahead. Rich Soda, 6' junior who played an outstanding defensive game throughout, garnered eight of his game total of ten points in the final quarter as the Warriors moved to a comfortable margin in the waning minutes of the game. Soda held hard driving, high scoring star Mike Kirn to four points for the evening. Hiller, who probably played his finest game as a Warrior, was the high scorer for the game with 17 points. Spriggs had 16 for North Chicago. McHenry FG FT F Laurence 3 3 4 Lockwood 2 2 2 Bentz 3 3 3 Soda 4 2 0 Smith 3 3 4 Hiller 7 3 3 22 16 16 N. Tigers Invade Warrior Stand Friday Night Traditional rival Crystal Lake will be the Warrior opponent this Friday as the Tigers, under coach Fran Wagner, will invade McHenry for a conference basketball tilt starting at 8 p.m. The Tigers, with a record of 0-3 in conference play, are being led by 5'7" junior transfer student Dennis Desmond, from Trinity High School in Bloomington, 111. The tiny sharpshooter is third in the conference scoring derby with a 23.7 per game average through the first three conference games. Crystal Lake will be handicapped with 6'2" Bob Edwards still out of the lineup with an ankle fracture. Rick Green, senior, and juniors Glen Miller, 6'2", and Steve Gulley have been the most able Tiger performers to date. Coach Cliff Fulton of the Warriors, after two wins last weekend, now has his squad on the move and is anticipating a Warrior win to keep the Orange and Black title hopes alive. McHenry Frosh Undefeated Coach Bert Hagemann has the McHenry freshmen rolling merrily along thus far. Last week the frosh beat Barrington 40-35 and Monday afternoon traveled to North Chicago and edged the Warhawk frosh 50-47. John Reinboldt has tallied 56 points in the two games. Other boys doing a fine job for Coach Hagemann include Bob Mauch, Frank Cuda, Tim Martin, Chuck Reilly, Dave Weber. Broncos Buck Our Grapplers For First Loss The McHenry wrestling team went down in defeat for the first time in four outings last Friday night to an alert Barrington squad. Capitalizihg on the mistakes of a few of the boys, the Broncos jumped out to a quick lead and were stopped only by the two captains. Captain Jim "Cricket" Anderson showed poise in a 64) victofy over his opponent as did Captain Ron Gelvin shutting out his opponent for a >4-0 victory. Both kept their records, clean with 4-0 slates. The tea though, will be ready and wai, ing for the Arlington Heigl Grapplers, ready to prove that they can bounce back.
