HARRISON PTA LAUNCHES DRIVE FOR MEMBERSHIP The theme of the hext Har, prison PTA meeting JaWj,2 is numbers. / Joseph Liggett, junior high teacher at Harrison school, will discuss grid demonstrate the so-called "new math". This relatively new method of teachings mathematics has been adopted . by many school systems, including Harrison, but not without controversy, mostly among adults who do not understand the concepts, and some educators who question results of the technique. Meanwhile, Gertrude Brickley and Amy Street, co-chairmen of the membership committee, are playing another numbers game. ' With PTA membership at a record level of nearly 200, this committee started the new year determined to enroll at least one member from each family having students at Harrison. In order to produce the right answer of 100 percent family participation, the committee will contact all non-members Who have children in school. Harrison already has enlled all teachers, to establish a "first" in state enrollrpent records. The big push Utntil April 1, for purposes of being counted at state headquarters, will be to achieve total family membership. All who have not joined are asked to come to Tuesday evening's meeting, starting at p.m. at the school, to sign u The small fifty cent membership- cost will be more than compensated by the'knowledge adults will get in understand ing and mastering the mathematics program. Liggett has conducted special evening classes for parents of seventh and eighth grade students. One of the biggest difficulties in changing to »new method of teaching any*subject is to get adults to understand what their children are doing. In the case of mathematics, many parents express a feeling of being inadequate by their inability to comprehend the new nfiath course. The Harrison PTA meeting provides an excellent opportunity to^jfind out.
