Thursday/ February 18, 1965 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section Two County Mental Health Center (This is the first in a series of articles concerning the Mental Health Center of Mc- Henry County, which is located in tocHenry) The Mental Health Center for McHenry County is a community medical facility established to provide help for residents of the county who have mental or emotional difficulties. As a community center, a board of directors, who themselves reside in the county and represent residents of the county, establish the policies by which the cerfter's staff operates. \ The present officers of the board were elected in November, 1964. Mental and emotional problems are psychiatric (medical) problems which have an effect upon the community. These problems are best thought of as a person's inability to deal with the everyday affairs of his or her life situation. They may stem from physical ill-health, inner psychological forces, social maladjustments or difficulties in relation to others either at home, at work, at school, etc. Usually, more than one of these causes contributes to the person's emotional or mental difficulties; other factors, too, may contribute. As a medical resource in the community, the center requires direction and supervision by a physician, in this case, a psychiatrist. Dr. Salvador Martinez is the psychiatric director of the center and is qualified to diagnose and plan treatment programs for persons who have difficulties in their adjustment to everyday situations. Dr. Eugene Stern, staff psychiatrist, assists in performing medical diagnosis and treatment planning services. This frees the psychiatric director's time for programming for the center's overall operation. Assisting the center with children's problems is Dr. Robert Russell. He has had specialized training in child psychiatry at the Institute of Juvenile Research, is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Illino|s, and is eligible for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The problems presented by persons in search of help may have had their beginnings in early experiences in the person's life. To help in understanding the background of the problems, a life history of the person may further pinpoint diagnostic and treatment conclusions. Mrs. Shirley Blumberg, psychiatric social worker, is especially trained in this area. Since intellectual and personality conditions contribute to an individual's difficulties, psychological testing may be needed to assist in the diagnosis and the treatment planning. George Mally, clinical psychologist, joined the staff in June, 1964. Psychotherapy--talking over one's problems with a professionally trained person -- is the main form of help provided at the center. AH professional staff members have been trained and are experienced in the practice of psycho-therapy. A person in need of help may be seen by any of the professional staff members. In the case of the psychologist and the social worker, psychotherapy is conducted under the medical responsibility and direction of the psychiatrist. As a medical agency, an attempt is made to have every person who asks for services to be seen first by a psychiatrist. He would determine the, need, in conference with other staff members, for further diagnostic work-ups, such as psychological testing or obtaining of social history. Other staff also assist in the planning of how to best help the person in need; the person may be assigned to the .social worker or the psychologist for help. To assist the professional staff, Mrs. June Keller and Mrs. Marion Olsen provide secretarial services. Administration of the center's program on a daily basis is carried out by Mr. Mally. This, again, relieves the psychiatric director of the details of the center's activities. The administrator works in close cooperation with the board of directors and the psychiatric director to maintain communications, both within the center and with the community.
