After taking a nice bag of pheasants it was suggested that we try our shooting eye on "Crazy Quail" a clay bird game designed to test one's wingshooting abilities. This game is unlike trap and skeet in that the trap is located in a pit and the birds can be thrown at any angle. The gunner never knows when or in which direction he will be shooting. After the first few shots we were checking our shells to be sure the shot had been put in, and by the end of the round we were seriously considering an extended visit to a nice peaceful rest home. As always, we enjoyed the shooting, but our score would not bear mention. We feel that anyone who masters "Crazy Quail" should be able to hit every game bird he shoots at. The McHenry Sportsmen's Club will hold a registered trap shoot on their grounds near Pistakee Lake, Sunday, Feb. 21. The program starts at 10 a.m., with 21 trophies to be awarded. Boaters should check their Jifesaving devices before; the 1965 boating season begins. Life jackets, buoyant seat cushions or any other equipment that is filled with kapok or fiber glass must have this buoyant material encased in heatsealed plastic bags. If material is not in a plastic bag the device is not considered acceptable by the U. S. Coast Guard. Tests have proved that kapok or fiber glass filling loses its buoyancy in a few years of the material is not in plastic bags. According to Dr. Harlow B. Mills, chief of the Illinois Natural History Survey, counts of prairie chickens on booming grounds in south-central Illinois showed 19 per cent fewer birds present in 1964 than the year before. Increased planting of row crops by farmers and, re- . duced acreage in grasslands are considered the main reason for the decline. The survey and the State Department of Conservation have cooperated with the Prairie Chicken Foundation of Illinois in efforts to save this once abundant species through the establishment of sanctuaries. This is an important meeting as many things will have to be discussed before the State Delegate meeting, Feb. 28, in Springfield. A review of the Feb. 11 executive meeting held. in the home of Duke and Irene Adams Will, be heard along with com-, mittee reports by the various chairmen, Marty Klapperich, social; Harold Krug, range captain: Les Adams, tournament; Harve Eady, food; Ray Plucinski, awards and Irene Adams, publicity. Other cbmmittee chairmen will be appointed. . Plans are also being made for the March 14, "Slush Shoot", a field invitational to be held on the NIB range. If you can spare a few hours on any Saturday or Sunday, before that date to get things in readiness, your help will be appreciated. New members are being taken into the club at this time. Anyone enjoying the sport of archery , in any phase is invited to attend one of our shoots or one of the meetings.'
