Warrior Victory Over Zion Keeps Team In Conference Title Race It took a bit of doing, but Coach Cliff Fulton pulled his Warriors basketball team through to another victory last Friday night before another packed house. It was the Zion Zee-Bees this The J McHenry Warriors retime and they were a tough gained very much in the North team to overcome. The visitors Suburban, conference basket- Started off like they were out to set a scoring record. While they were hotter than a 10-cent store pistol, our boys were colder than January of '65. Both teams had boys on the flu list. We knew Rich Smith was off his normal pace in the first half, but didn't know until talking with Jack Thomas after the game that the flu bug had taken its toll. Both Rich Smith and Rich Soda were victims of the bug, but both came through when the chips were down. Gary Lockwood did a great job of lifting the team. He gave it all he had and needed a rest when Coach Fulton took him out. Coach and player knew it was time while many of us wanted to see Gary continue. Those are the little signals that we grandstand coaches miss. As Tom Evans remarked, "Lockwood never hurts the team when he goes in for a While". With the Warriors losing at halftime, nobody had the confidence expressed by Dick Rabbitt. He has a knowledge of sports and a winning spirit that is great for a school. Don Howard was mentioning anoither fellow with great spirit-- Roy Moss. He has the same fine spirit When on the bench as when he is in the game, always pulling for his mates to come through. We sat with our long time friend, Sib Whiting, again and reviewed the game as it is played today and as it was played way back when. We agreed that this boy Smith of Zion is a classy basketball playxer- Coach Fulton looked like he could bite spikes in two at half time, but must have had some words of wisdom for his boys the way they fired back to take the lead in the third period. When word came in at the end of the game that Woodstock had taken the measure of league - leading Dundee, there was joy in Warrior camp. Now McHenry travels to Dundee Friday night with a chance to tie for the title. Dundee has a 10-3 record while McHenry and Woodstock are 9-4. Woodstock travels to North Chicago for their final game and may have trouble. Of course, Libertyville clobbered North Chicago last week so we dunno. If McHenry and Woodstock both win, it will end up in a 3-way tie. Tension is mounting. Speaking of ties, it seems unbelievable that the Van Arsdale twins of Indiana U. are tied with 1150 points each after playing 67 games in the last three years. Noted in the box score that Paul Morenz came through again when he got in the game against Indiana. Enthusiasm runs high since our Warrior basketball team developed into a winner. Talked with Frank Rourke as he rested in his hospital bed in Woodstock Sunday. Gary Lockwood, 6'3" senior, came, off the bench in the second period and ignited the spark that was lacking in the Warrior play up to that time. Lockwood continued to be the main cog in the Warrior force through the third period that eventually led to the Warrior victory. The local lads were a shoddy ball club for a period and a half before Lockwood entered the fray. The Warriors were behind at the end of a quarter 20-11 and still were in arrears at the half by a score of 34-27. Take The Lead Midway through the third stanza the Warriors captured the lead on a follow-up by Soda. A two pointer by Mayfield of the Zee-Bees put the visitors ahead again, but the Warriors,, went ahead permamently seconds later. By the end of the period the Orange and Black were in command 50-44 and pulling away. Rich Smith held the hot hand for the Warriors in the final period as he tossed in five fielders. Up to that point the Warriors high scoring guard had been as cold as the proverbial iceberg. As a result of the Warrior win and the Dundee loss to Woodstock the share of the conference title that the Warriors had hoped for will be the stake in the game with the Cards Friday night at Dundee. 4 Scoring Balance Coach Cliff Fulton's lads again showed sensational scoring balance in the Zion win. Lockwood, Laurence and Soda all tallied 16 points apiece. Myron Bentz had 10, Smith an even dozen, and Wayne Hiller six. Fulton was able to play senior reserves Rod Mauch and Mickey Goodfel low in the closing minute of the game. It was also the last home performance for Smith, Lockwood, Laurence, Bentz, Hiller, and McHenry (76) Smith Soda . A Warrior victory will enable the McHenry team to share in the conference championship. Dundee has alalready assured itself of at least a tie for the crown, but would cherish an outright title. In the last encounter between the two clubs the Cards won a 60-59 victory with Steve Lindsey, Dundee senior forward, having one of his finest performances of the season. Big Tom Goers, 6'5" Card center was hampered that night with a bad ankle and only scored 12 points, well below his 20 point per game average. The Dundee team has lost two of its last three games, while the Warriors, the hottest team in the league, have run through six conference opponents with- CAGE* Touncr HERE SUNDAY The ever popular Illinois State Court C.O.F. basketball tournament gets underway next Sunday, Feb. 28, in the M.C.H.S gym. This is the 19th annual tourney for the Forester group and once again it returns to McHenry under the active promotion of the local court. Each year the local Foresters join forces in this huge undertaking and each year they come through with a well organized tournament that attracts cagg fans from far and near. The whistle will blow and the ball starts bouncing at noon Sunday as the Junior teams of McHenry and Johnsburg get the show on the road. Games will continue through the next two weeks, . almost up to St. Patrick's Day when the likes o* Harry Conway and Earl Duffy will be wearin' the green. Dave Freund, 103, defeated Brian Broomhead of Libertyville 2-1 to capture a third place medal. Heavyweight Ron Gelvin, ended his career by defeating Cliff Foskett of Grayslake 4-3. Broomhead had defeated Freund two weeks ago for conference championship. And Foskett had defeated Gelvin twice earlier in the season. Rich Wolf, 127, and Jim Anderson, 120, lost their first matches in the two day tournament held at ^lundelein. Of the 98 wrestlers who participated in the tournament, only 24 first and second places, will go on to the State Final at Champaign this weekend. There were 28 schools in the tournament with Waukegan again winning the first place trophy. McHenry placed 11th with 12 points. Grant High School, with three contenders, placed 2nd and Evanston came in third. Patrick's came close, but stumout a loss in the second rouncff bIed in the clutch to drop into of conference play. The last Warrior defeat was- at the hands of the Dundee club on January 15. Dundee will display three All- Conference selections, just released this week by the conference secretary. Thy are Lindsey, Goers and Campanelli. Rich Smith, senior guard, and Ken Laurence, senior ccnter, were acknowledge from the well balanced Warrior team. Those attending the game should arrive early enough to assure themselves a ticket. The Dundee gym will hold 2500. St. Mary's Five Wins American Legion Tourney St. Mary's regained a leg on the Traveling American Legion trophy Saturday afternoon by. nipping McHenry Junior High 45-42. Both teams demonstrated some fine basketball with Junior High rushing out to an impressive 10-4 lead. But the new champions roared back tot lead at the half and to mairi--i tain an uncomfortable cushion of 5 to 9 points thru the second stanza. Possibly the surprising balance of the Royals' attack spelled the difference between the two quintets. The defending Champion St.' a nice note from Peter M. Justen telling us of meeting some Lake County resorters of Chicago who are readers of S.I.H. Pete also enclosed a clipping telling that Billy Klaus, recently named manager of the New York, Pa. team, is also filling some speaking engagements. From Sarasota, Florida, comes McHenry basketball followers will be pleased to know that Rich Smith and Ken Laurence have been chosen on the North Suburban All-Conference team. Both players have been outstanding in boosting their team to a sparkling finish in the league. The first game will be a contest between the Bi-County Conference champs, the Richmond grade school and a strong Holy Name Grade School of Wilmot, Wisconsin. Game time is 1:30 p.m. The second game will feature The Richmond Zephyrs against' Huntley in a.league game. These two teams are tied for position in the league. Harrison of Wonder Lake battled on even terms for one half against McHenry Jr. High. But the runner-ups got rolling in the last two quarters to triumph decisively. St. Mary Cagers Move Along In Diocesan Meet McHenry St. Mary's marched forcefully into the semi-finals of the Rockford Diocesan Regional Basketball Tournament at Elgin Sunday by overpowering St. Laurence of Elgin 46-16. Previously the local cagers had beaten St. Thomas of Crystal Lake by a similar score of 46-13 to advance to the quarter-finals. St. Patrick's of McHenry, however, fell before the onslaught of a strong St. Patrick's of St. Charles team- After Mc- Henry's Irish completely dominated play in the second quarter and moved out to slight lead in the third, they suddenly lost their poise. Their shooting went cold and the St. Charles press lured them into many ball-handling errors. The final score between two even teams was a surprising 43-17 debacle. Next Sunday St. Mary's will meet St. Charles Borromeo of Hampshire at 1:30 in the first semi-final. St. Patrick's of St. Charles will oppose St. Joseph's ipf Elgin at 2:30. The winners Vill vie at 8:00 p.m. in the St. fedward's High School Gym for the Regional title. The losers will compete for 3rd place at 7:00 p.m. The Regional victor will advance to the Grand Championships at Freeport on the following Sunday. Two years ago St. Mary's dropped a close decision in the finals and four years copped the Grand . Crown. Loren Miller, great scoring ace of the Richmond team, scored 35 points as his teammate, Motley, matched Don Bentz with 24. Johnsburg was able to come up with balanced scoring throughout the lineup. Richmond's 4 point lead at the quarter stood up at half time before the Foresters forged ahead 68-63^t the three quarter mark. The last period was a battle royal.
