We saw Some real good officiating at basketball games this season, but none better than our own "Chuck" Cuda turned in when he was pressed into service in the Zion game here when one of the officials failed to show up at game time. It was a tough spot to be placed in, but nobody,, could complain about a home towner in this case. The Warriors were far off their real class in the Dundee game. Wayne Hiller was a real fireball, and others showed spark at times, but it just wasn't a Warrior night. Successful Season For MCHS Wrestlers Under Coach "Hutch" Guidance They turned hundreds of people away at the Dundee gym, but somebody goofed. There were vacant spots in the stands. For all we know, they may have been reserved seats in one section on the Dundee side. Anyhow, they were vacant as many will testify. The old problem of people taking up extra space to park their coats was also in evidence. But, that happens in every gym. Dundee isn't alone with that problem. Every time they make an announcement at a crowded game for people to move closer together, it sounds real chummy. If they would only tell us to move thataway, it would do some good. Well, wevhad no kick. We sat. Thanks to Cliff Fulton, Joe Schmitt, Don Blake and others crowded a few rows behind the McHenry bench. The C.O.F. state tournament resumes next Sunday in the MCHS gym and games are bound to tighten up with the first round removing some teams that have great spirit, but not enough ammunition. John Stilling had about a week of retirement from his long years of operating his gas station and tire shop before a sudden ailment sent him to Veterans' Hospital in Hines, Illinois. We'll bet he would like a card from old friends. He is in Ward E, Room 307. We appreciate kind words from Theodore Reese, who says --"Keep writing". After the let down at the Dundee game, McHenry basketball fans are all hopped up over the 95-75 Warrior victory over Woodstock in the regional tourney at Elgin Tuesday night. If the boys can hold that fine edge Thursday night (8 p.m.) against Elgin High, they will go into the .finals Friday night. Wouldn't we like to knock off Elgin! We are at a loss to know what happened to our "Pickup" and "Padre" contributions. Anybody know? COURT BRIEFS Appearing in the court of Magistrate Joe Ritter in McHenry Thursday morning, Richard E. Hansen and Edward H. Whitney of McHenry each paid fines of $10 and $5 costs for speeding. Edgar M. Cozadd of McHenry was fined $5 and $5 costs on the same charge, and Elmer M. Freund of McHenry had an $11 speeding charge suspended. He paid $5 costs. Ivar R. Benson of Ingleside was fined $10 and $5 costs for making an improper turn. Robert John Dickman of Wonder Lake pleaded not guilty to battery when he appeared before Judge James Cooney March 1. His case was set for trial April 19. Mary Schultz of McHen repleaded guilty to driving while her license was revoked and was sentenced to ninety days in the county jail. It takes heart, desire and ability, to be a success in wrestling, plus cooperation, courage, enthusiasm and loyalty. Attributes that will remain with a boy and influence his entire life. Outstanding Records Some of the boys who provided many exciting moments during the past season were senior Dave Freund (103) who complied 17 victories, won the Mundeleih tournament 103 pound championship, State district championship and placed 3rd in the state sectional. Senior Jim Anderson 112 won 15 matches this year, 17 matches his sophomore year cand 8 matches his junior year for a total of 40. Senior Ron Gelvin, one of M.C.H.S. finest heavyweights, did a! tremendous job of winning 46 victories in his wrestling career to set a new school record. Ron also has won the high point trophy for the second straight year. Senior Dean Glosson (133), who had to do battle against state champions, state contenders and conference champions all year, did a great job by his tenacious ability to stick in there and fight every match down to the finish, giving his opponents with credentials a tough time. Senior Rich Wolf (127> won 11 matches this year and was alwa&^in-there giving his best. Wolf placed third in the conference and second in the state district. Parents Show Interest Many of the parents attended matches and "tournaments both home and away during the year. The moms and dads deserve a lot of credit for their sons' success and while the boys do not realize it now, they will someday. Mr. and Mrs. Gelvin saw everyone of Ron's 46 victories. Mr. and Mrs. Glosson saw their son Dean in every match this year. Mr. and Mrs. Freund saw their son Dave win 17 matches this year and crowned champion at Mundelein and Barrington. Mr. or Mrs. Weikel saw their son Dave wrestle his heart out in every match. These are just a few of the parents who followed the team and their sons' success and failure as a high school wrestler. In the semi-finals, Cary led all the way in defeating the Johnsburg Foresters 90-75. The Foresters bounced back to beat Dundee 77-70 in a close battle for third place. Woodstock's defeat of North Chicago pushed the Warriors into the third slot in the final standings. The Warrior team shot a miserable 29 percent in the fracas played before a jam packed crowd. They were able to hit only 18 of 61 shots fired up which is- not of championship caliber. The only Warrior field goal of the first period was a five footer by Rich Smith at the end of the period. The Warriors were on the short end by a score of 13-6 by the end of the stanza. Steve Lindsey, Dundee All-Conference forward, led the big red in the period, both offensively and defensively. Come Alive! The Warriors were further behind .by the 5:00 minute mark of the second quarter, 26-15. But then the Warriors came alive in a span of 90 seconds to knot the count at 26-26 on the efforts of Wayne Hiller, Gary Lock wood and Roy Moss. Four Dundee free throws in the last half minute of the first half gave John Paul's club a 30-26 halftime edge. The Warriors appeared to have the momentum tffat carried them through the second period as they spurted for seven straight points in the third period to take a 33-30 lead early in the quarter. However, the Cards stormed back as the Warriors just could not find the hoop and the Dundee club managed a 40-33 lead after three periods: The Warriors trailed all of the final period and never did catch the high flying Cardunals. The Orange and Black did get within three points late in the period but that was the closest they came to victory. Duane Paarlow, Dundee reserve center sank two free throws with three seconds left in the game to run the score to the final 56- 51. Far Below Par ' Steve Rowe led the Card at-, tack with 14 points on five field* ers and a quartet of free throws. Lindsey followed with 13 points. Ken Laurence scored 12 points for the Warriors, followed by Smith and Rich Soda with 11 each. Defensively both clubs ST. MARY'S FIVE EDGED 41-40 IN REGIONAL FINALS iSt. Mary's of McHenry came as close to winning a championship as it is possible to do and still not achieve it. They dropped a one point overtime decision to St. Patrick's of St Charles 41-40. This balanced the series for the two evenly matched quintets, since the local team was the victor on January 27th by the same one point margin. The Royals fought' like tigers throughout but made too many bad passes against a tough defense. Ordinarily their passing has been their strong offensive weapon. Their defense was very good, but St. Patrick's deadly accuracy from the free throw line spelled the difference. Gino Hester closed out his St. Mary's career with another outstanding performance. The other eighth graders who also showed Why they were K:C. titlists and American Legion Champions were: Mark Camasta, Russell Leight, Frank Patellaro, Mike Janik. In addi tion, Rick Zeller, Jim Kloeckner, Greg Adams, and Mark Freund did a fine job in the semi-finals. Don Smith, Pat Niessen and Gary Harrison will be back from the Junior Varsity. Unfortunately Kirk Links, regular center, was still un able to play after being out six weeks with a broken wrist. Interested parties should con over St. Charles of Hampshire with relative ease, 42-28. St. Patrick's blasted St. Joseph's of Elgin 58-35. St. Patrick's of St. Charles will now represent this region in the Grand Championships at Freeport next Sunday. Adams Northern Illini Bowmen will hold a club shoot Sunday morning. Harold Krug, range captain has called a work party starting at 1 p.m., to prepare for the "Slush Shoot", March 14. This will be a field invitational with medals awarded in several classes. Our tournament chairman, Les Adams won a medal at Fox Valley Archers Invitational. Watch that fellow he's climbing the ladder fast. Jean Bird won third place in women's instinctive class at the Chicago Sports Show. John ifcawaski also participated that night. Dahl s^t a conference scoring record for a single game as he poured in 51 points in the game as he hit 20 baskets and 11 free throws. It was the most prolific scoring dt>ne by the Warriors this season. The Warriors raced to ra commanding 23-11 first quarter lead, but saw the Streaks move back into contention in the second period as Ev Martindale tossed in 11 points in the period-. By the half the Warriors led 43-35. Laurence, Smith and- Soda paced the Warriors in the first half with Wayne Hiller performing aggressively on defense. Martindale got help m the third period from Ed Hall and the Streaks at one time closed their deficit to four points. However, the Warriors did manage to contain the Streaks each time it appeared the Warriors might be overtaken. The Orange and Black were outscored 22-20 in the third stanza, which put the score at 63-57 starling the final quarter. From the very outset of the last quarter the Warriors dominated the play. Bentz, Laurence and Rich Smith literally scored at will as the Warriors rolled up 32 points in the period while limiting the Streaks to 18. Martindale was sensational in his final prep game. He did not score in the initial period but ended up the evening with 29 points to lead all scorers in the game. Ken Laurence led the Warrior attack with 28, Rich Smith had 24 and Myron Bentz 18. Laurence and Bentz controlled the boards for the Warriors. The Warriors now face the Elgin Maroons in an encounter Thursday night starting at 8 p.m. The powerful Maroons have always been a stumbling block to Warrior hopes for a regional title. Tickets for the game will be sold at the McHenry high school office until 1 p.m. Thursday. Last Sunday brought out some good games and some not so close. This is usual in the first round as weaker teams are eliminated in the survival of the fittest. Some real good teams, like St. Mary's Juniors, are out -after jplaying in real hard battles. This one .went into a double overtime.
