Thursday, March 11. 1965 THE McHENRY PLAtNDEALER LAKELAND PARK NEWS BARB MEURER -- KAY DRUML 885-4856 BISHOP BESTOWS MARIAN AWARD ON KATHIE BECKER ' One of the days that will be a lasting memory for Kathie Ann Becker will always be Girl Scout Sunday, March 7, 1965, for it was on that date that she was presented with her Catholic Girl Scout religious medal in St. James church in Rockford by the Most Reverand Loras T. Lane,, Bishop of the ' Rockford Diocese. Kathie is the first Girl Scout from St. Patrick's parish to have ever earned this award and was also the only girl from the Valley View Neighborhood to have received the medal. Kathie deserves a great deal of credit as this medal is not an easy one to receive. She had to do extra work for her parish and Kathie has done sacristy work for 3 years. One day a week for six weeks for a six months period or its equivalent is the necessary amount of time a girl must put in on church work. A thorough understanding of her religion must also be known as the priest gives the girl a very complete questioning of her religion. A pilgrimage must be made and several of Kathie's fellow Girl Scouts accompanied her on hers. There are many, many hours of extra work which go into the work for this award and we feel very proud that Kathie is from our subdivision. Her very proud parents, Dottie and Irv Becker, her two sisters, Mary and Margie, and her brother, Kenny, all saw Kathie receive her medal as did her very proud Scout leader Alice Bieschke. Several of the girls of Cadette Troop 41 were also at Rockford to see the presentation. Troop 41's colors were presented by Colleen Doherty and Jessie Nell. Pattie Schmidt had the honor of presenting a Spiritual Bouquet to the Bishop. Linda Justen, Barbara Vilim, Joann Schabow and Chris Herkes of Kathie's troop were also there to see Kathie. Mrs. Betty Lakowske and her daughter, Mary Jane, as well as Rosemarie Thelen of Troop 295 of Johnsburg were very impressed with the ceremony also. They had gone along with troop 41. Bill Schabow, whose daughter is in troop 41, was also witnessing and taking pictures of Kathie's big day. Kay and Ed Druml felt very honored to have also seen her receive her medal. Following the church service a reception was held for the girls and the Bishop. Kathie's folks had all the people who had gone to Rockford as supper guests upon their return to McHenry. In addition Kathie's Marian, award she also has earned nine merit badges and is as a Cadette Scout working for her first class rank. She is also a very talented dancer and ardent reader. We're all very proud of you, Kathie, and hope you have set an example for Girl Scouts of every religion to work for their religious award in their church. We're sure Kathie that you will always remember this very special day and we also know that you will always work as hard as you did to receive this very wonderful medal for what ever you want in your future life. You're a very wonderful girl, Kathie, it's our honor to know you. Little League Registration Wednesday, March 17, is the night all Little Leaguers are waiting for.
