YOUNG SINGERS GIVE BROADWAY SHOW APRIL 4 Young McHenry high school vocalists are in rehearsal for their second annual Broadway Miniatures program, which they will present in the school auditorium Sunday evening, April 4, at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are on sale by chorus members or at the door. Five Broadway plays, dating from early in the century to the present time, have been selected. They are "Student Prince", "West Side Story", "The King and I", "Oliver* and "Sound of Music". The various choruses will be featured in medleys from four of the shows, and there also will be solos and ensembles, performed in costumes. Featured, among others, will be three who recently won top ratings in state competition, Sara Borchardt, Cathy Ruth and Carl Johnson. Both young people are 1962 graduates of Marian Central Catholic high school, Woodstock. Miss Thennes is presently employed in Elk Grove Village, and her fiance is employed in Ringwood. GARDEN CLUB ATTENDS FLOWER SHOW THIS WEEK The McHenry Garden Club attended the Chicago World Flower and Garden Show at Mc- Cormick Place on Tuesday, March 23, in place of its regular monthly meeting. Spring arrived officially, and the club hopes permanently, on March 20 at 2:05 p.m. and the Garden Show "ushered in spring" as Mrs. Chester Evans Flower Show Chairman, so aptly put it. On Arbor Day, April 23, plans are being made for the plant-i ing of a tree in the name of the club. It is being donated by the president, Miss Mary Burdahl, and her sister, Florence, in memory of their mother. Final plans will be announced later. On April 29. the meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Vaughn Jones. The Federation is stressing conservation this year and the club has received a large supply of new material which will be shown at this meeting. Every member will be expected to bring a plant they have grown to the April meeting. McHENRY SINGER RECEIVES ROLE IN "STUDENT PRINCE" Irene Keim of McHenry has, been selected to sing the role of Princess Margaret, fiancee of the Prince, in the Woodstock Fine Arts association's production of "Student Prince" to be presented in May. The role of Kathy, heroine and beloved waitress at the Inn of the Three Golden Apples, will be sung by Miss Harriet Meyer, soprano with the Apollo Opera Company of Chicago. The Apollo Opera came to Woodstock on the occasion of the diamond jubilee celebration of the Opera House last Oct. 24, 1964. Singing the role of the handsome German Prince Karl Franz is Elijah Powell, who is, currently stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station at Waukegan. The gentle and scholarly tutor for Karl Franz, Dr. Engel, will be portrayed by Alex Kalamaras of Chicago. The commedienne, the maid-of-all work around the Inn is Gretchen, who will be sung by Peggy Denker of Crystal Lake. The many other roles in this lively musical are being filled by local and county residents. There are many openings still available in the men's chorus, including both tenors and basses, and for anyone interested in working on the technical or stage crews. YOUNG COUNTY GIRLS ENTERED IN TEEN CONTEST Applications from many local teen-agers are being re ceived for the Miss McHenry County Teen-Ager contest. The judging, to take place in the Harvard Community high school gymnasium on April 23, at 8 in the evening, will be interspersed with various acts for the audience's Entertainment. Probably the act which will attract the most interest is Sumiko, who was Miss Japanese Teen-Ager of 1964. Besides her sons, Jackie Faust,-an outstanding organist who has appeared in Chicago hotels and on radios, will play. Doris Stockton, known as the "first lady of the Marimba" will be present with her marimba and her drums. The DaWild Sisters, world champion baton twirlers, will also show the audience the ability that made them world champions. These acts will provide interludes between the judging of the teenagers entered in the contest from all parts of McHenry county. These pretty high-schoolers will all be trying for that title of Miss McHenry County Teen-Ager to take it back to their own town, and to wear it in the regional competition on Milk Day in Harvard, when one of these girls will be chosen t6'go to New Jersey in September to compete for the national title. TRUDY FREUND IS OUTSTANDING SORORITY PLEDGE Trudy Freund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald M. Freund, 3017 West Crescent, McHenry, was recently selected outstanding pledge of the year by the members of Beta Iota chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority, of which she is a member at Eastern Illinois University. Miss Freund is a freshman physics major at Eastern Illinois. The Outstanding Pledge award is given annually by the sorority at their scholarship and activities banquet and is based upon scholarship and activities as a criterion. Late in the day, about fifty friends and' relatives called to partake of the many culinary treats. For the second year, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas DeCarlo-at'3102 W. Victoria, Country Club subdivision, observed the traditional St. Joseph's Day celebration 6n Friday. Highlight of the Italian Feast Day was the huge table spread with culinary treats. Mrs. DeCarlo, her mother, Mrs. Mamie Cullotta, who rer sides in the home, and a neighbor, Mrs. Alice Brda, began baking for the special day about two weeks ago. Much of the food prepared ahead of time was frozen until St. Josephs Day. The table was set early on Friday, and later the food was blessed by Fr. Eugene Parker of St. Patrick's Catholic chUrch, in keeping with tradition. Afterward, friends, neighbors and family called throughout the day and evening to partake of specially prepared spaghetti and the multitude of other treats consisting mostly of out-ofseason food such as melons and other fruits/as well as a variety of Italian dishes. Regardless of the day of week, the spaghetti is always prepared with a meatless sauce, and fish is part of the repast. In all, the DeCarlos invited more than fifty persons to take part in the observance. Mrs. DeCarlo said that many Italian families mark the observance with feasts annually. However, if they are prepared as a special thanksgiving, it is customary to continue the practice for three years. The size of stockings is desigated by the number of inches from toe to heel.
