Earl Sonnemaker Promoted To Captain Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sonnemaker and children have been living at Montgomery, Ala., for the past 3V2 months while Earl attended S.O.S. school there. AUXILIARY NEWS by Renee Jende The Women's Auxiliary to Fox River Post 4600 met on April 12, at the club rooms. A warm welcome to Renee Freund, our newest auxiliary member. We are pleased to have you with us, though two Renees may be confusing at times. The most important business of the evening was the election of officers for the coming year. By unanimous vote, the auxiliary elected for president, Jean Wiles; senior vice-president, Viola Schuble; junior vice-president, Ethel Groth; treasurer, Marge Moreth; chaplain, Inez Young; conductress, Josephine Hansen; guard, Dora Krocker; and thre£-year trustee, Genevieve Bradley. We are sure that the auxiliary will continue its fine work under the able leadership of the ladies elected to office. The delegates elected were Marge Moreth, Marie Heinz, Genevieve Bradley, Viola Schuble, Josephine Hansen, Sylvia Hess, Dorothy Reinboldt, Ethel Groth, Mary Miller, Dora Krocker and Katherine Fuhler. The alternates elected were Renee Jende, Vi Abbink, Inez Young, Doris Wetzel, Marian Moser, Mary Murphy, Gerry Breede, Lil Doran, Carrie Molinaire "and Pat Ruemelin. The delegates in office at the present time are reminded that there will be a district meeting on May 16 at the Community Center in Marengo. The officers of the 5th district and auxiliary are invited to march in the Loyalty Day parade on May 2 in Elgin. The V.F.W. auxiliary department convention will be held June 25, 26 and 27 at the La- Sane Hotel. Our sympathy is extended to all the tornado victims in the surrounding area. Members of Post 4600 and auxiliary, including President Gen Bradley, senior vice-president, Jean Wiles, Rehabilitation Chairman Ethel Groth, Roy Bradley, Joan Bradley and young Tommy Wiles, made four urns of coffee, approximately 250 cups, and took it to Island Lake on Sunday evening. Two urns were left at the firehouse and two urns were taken to Gate 2, where people were working to clear debris. This gesture was greatly appreciated. The VFW and Auxiliary is organized for one purpose--Service. A thank-you note was received from Wally Groth,"4 the junior vice commander of Post 4600 for the work done by the auxiliary at the last post functions. Membership Chairman Jean Wiles reports we have 137 paid up members, leaving us two shy of, 100 percent. Kathy Fuhler, hospital chairman, read a letter from Margaret Henke, thanking her and her committee for the parties over the past year at Downey hospital, and her hopes for the continued cooperation throughout the year. She mentioned the fact that the veterans all look forward tc» this auxiliary's visits each month. A letter from Kay Kasting informs us that volunteers are still badly needed at Downey. Anyone having time to give to these hospitalized veterans are asked to call Kathy Fuhler for details. The Downey carnival is scheduled for the last week in June. Volunteers are needed for this event. Poppy Chairman Ethel Groth has asked . for volunteers for Poppy Day, which is in May. Vi Abbink, Community Service chairman, was unable to attend the meeting. In her absence, Renee Jende reported that the four books have been mailed to Dupo, 111., for competition. She thanked all the ladies who assisted in compiling these books. Their help was greatly appreciated. The post and auxiliary were to be commended for all the works done over the past year. Without the deed itself, there would be no books to compile. Vi worked very hard with many sleepless nights, and we all hope for a good showing in the contest. Florence Svoboda, essay chairman, reports that the essays are in the hands of the judges and will have a report on it as «soon as she is informed of the results. Our annual card party "has been set for May 12. Dora Krocker is the chairman for this event. Put a circle around this date. Get a group of your own for cards or bunco and plan to attend. Post 4600 is co-sponsoring the all-sports banquet this year, to be held at the Post home on April 28. The ladies of the auxiliary are preparing and serving the food, free of charge. As it states in the letter the dues come to twenty-eight dollars a year, eighteen dollars of this goes for disposal service, the ten dollars goes for roads, postage, etc. Out of this ten dollars the roads are plowed in the winter, sanded when needed and also graded and graveled where needed. As you all know this past winter required a lot of snow plowing and also several sandings. Unless' dues'{ire paid up by,. Association members and unless non-member property owners contribute substantially, the roads will not receive the necessary attention. You can not do work where there is not enough money to do such work. Stop and think. What is cheaper, to help get our roads in good shape again, or pay an expensive repair bill on your car? We all use the roads, why can't we help with maintaining them? The men who are working checking our roads, getting estimates for work, and seeing that the roads are plowed in the winter time or sanded do not get paid for this. The people who do the plowing, sanding, grading and graveling get paid for their work. It all boils down to this. Unless the association gets the money for the roads work can not be done on them. The money collected for the disposal service can not be used for the roads, it is strictly for disposal service. Let's not complain about the roads being so bad, let's do something about them by paying up the dues, or "by giving towards the roads. Like the old saying you can't get blood out of a turnip. Please send your money to the treasurer Pearle Stineman at 308 N. Glenwood. Near Tragedy .Henry and Freida Glick and their three children were in the dime store at Crystal Lake when the tornado hit. Freida and the three children were pinned under the debris. Their oldest son received a cut on his face. Freida was taken to the McHenry hospital with neck injuries. 1 am happy to report that Freida was released Fi'iday from the hospital. She will have to wear a neck brace for sometime. On behalf of everyone Henry, Freida and children we are more than happy you all are still with us. Home On Leave Friends and relatives were happy to see Gene Bolda home on a forty-five day leave. RADIOACTIVE WASTES The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking proposals from contractors to provide and operate a site for the storage of radioactive wastes, Dr. Franklin D. Yoder, state public health director, has announced. "The problem of storage and disposal of radioactive wastes from industrial, medical and research activities is increasing in Illinois," Dr. Yoder said. He indicated that the establishment of a disposal site is an immediate problem, pointing out that New York and Kentucky already have such areas in operation.
