CIVIL DEFENSE "Dear Editor: "Wih the recent disasters fresh in our minds, it seems like "a most opportune time'to reflect on civil defense. It was less than an hour after the first casualty was admitted to the emergency area that I was notified that they were prepared to take several more casualties if necessary. "There are some teen-age members of our civil defense unit of whom I am very proud. During their Easter vacation they went to Crystal Lake, Bay View Beach or wherever they were needed to clean up debris. Bob Schneider, Dale Marzano, Craig Narrows, Ken Reid and Bruce Okal are names that undoubtedly someday you will see as leaders of our community. "To those who say civil defense is unnecessary, please remember in October, 1959, a tornado struck in McHenry. The Fox River has overlowed its banks and forced, persons to evacuate their homes. Civil defense is you, protecting you and yours. If any person would like additional information regarding civil defense they may feel free to contact me. "John J. NEW TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES TO BE MAILED SOON The 1965-66 McHenry telephone directory will be mailed to McHenry customers next Thursday, S. F. Jozwiak, Illinois Bell manager, has announced. Jozwiak said 9,322 copies of the directory will be mailed this year compared to 7,915 which were sent out last year, an increase of 1,507 copies. Customers should begin using the new directories as soon as they are received. "Before discarding the old directory, be sure to give it a good shake," Jozwiak said. "People often file everything from money to baby pictures to stock certificates between the pages." SCIENCE TOPIC The Christian's approach to final victory over death will be a central theme at the McHenry Christian Science church this Sunday. The subject is "Probation After Death". One of the Bible selections to be read is from Galatians: "He that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." OPEN DISASTER LOAN OFFICE IN CRYSTAL LAKE A Small Business Administration disaster loan office opened in Crystal Lake on Monday, April 19. The office is located in the city recreation hall (main beach house). The office is open from noon until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and will be in operation until every disaster victim has had an opportunity to visit the office. On April 12, McHenry, Kane and Winnebago counties were declared disaster areas by the President. As a result, home owners and business firms who suffered losses in these counties or the immediate adjacent counties can apply for SBA disaster loans. These loans can be obtained from the SBA to restore a victim's home or business property as nearly as possible to its pre-disaster condition. SBA disaster loans are made with maturities running as high as 20 years and at interest rates of 3 percent per annum. It was pointed out that SBA disaster loans cannot be obtained when insurance proceeds are sufficient to cover the losses. Where insurance does not cover the entire losses, SBA can make disaster loans on the portion not covered by insurance. The directory again this year features the convenient space on the back cover to write down frequently called numbers. Space „also is provided on the front cover for fire and police numbers. All McHenry • customers should receive copies of the directory by April 29. If they have not received a copy by then, they are asked to call their service representative at the Illinois Bell business office. For some 20 years, the artist Ralph Earle used practically his full time doing paintings of Pres. Andrew Jackson.
