THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, May 6, 1965 I HEAR.. They say a fellow should always look ahead, but in writing a weekly column we must look back to recall events. Between penicillin and pills we had an active week. 'Twas hard holding the pace and something terrible happened. We couldn't smoke a cigar for two weeks! We had a pleasant experience Monday when Lou Consago phoned to say that Rocky Marciano, former world champion heavyweight, was in towrv and would we like to meet him. * It was in the beautiful home of Tony Varese that we met Rocky and a happy group of friends. We aren't going to name them 'caus it is never worthwhile if one person is missed. Anyhow, we were among good friends. It is nine years since Rocky retired as undefeated champ, but he still looks to be in fine shape. He has a forearm that would make a blacksmith look undeveloped. Wow! We found Rocky to be a comfortable, fellow to visit with on various subjects. He told us that Tony Varese has been his staunch friend and advisor. "Wish I had met him ten years sooner, said Rocky. They admire, respect and trust each other. Rocky makes many appearances thefie days at banquets covering sports, business, industry and professional fields. But, it doesn't take long to see that his big heart is with the kids, with a leaning toward the underprivileged kids. He strikes us as the right kind of guy who wouldn't pass up a dirty-faced kid on his way to meet a king. Time was too short to cover many avenues of thought, but we did have time to learn that Billy Marquart is in New York Open Weekdays 6:45 Sat. and Sun. 2:15 ElRl. He is being brought along carefully. It was time to leave and we shook hands with a fellow whom we seemed to have known a long time. We seemed to picture Mama and Papa Marciano in the background as fine, solid Italian parents, who brought up a good boy to be a real man -- a champ all the way. . The MCHS sports banquet was a real success and many young athletes set new records with the knife and fork. The VFW Auxiliary served a fine meal. And those gals donated their time all the way. Now, wasn't that nice. On Tuesday night we had a great time at the sports banquet at the Elks Club in Woodstock where the Big Six of Mc- Henry County high school sports were honored. With Attorney Bill Caldwell as MC we knew the program would be in able hands. Bill had a real sharp helper as he turned introductions over to Chuck Nihan, former pint sized ball of fire on St. Mary's and Harvard teams. Larry Dale, of "We want Larry" fame, stated that he was a better cheer leader than coach. Dpn Horn told of taking his Harvard football team to Maine Township High in the early days. The boys looked at that big squad and thought they were facing the world. Dan reminded them that there would be only 11 men left when the whistle blew. "Mac" McCracken, who has been with McHenry High since 1928, seemed to enjoy the program thoroughly. He has truly earned the honors bestowed. Owen Metcalf of Crystal Lake was in a humorous mood as he recalled the days gone by. Toney Roskie took a ribbing from Nihan, then arose to pay his best to the "old men" around him. Mel Stuessy, a great athlete, coach and official, told of the time he coached two teams, St. Mary's and Hebron, and darned if they didn't meet in the dis trict finals. "Red" Pace, former Woodstock athlete who has officiated big time football games, looked in fine shape and was in good form at the "mike." Bill George, of Chicago Bears fame, was really great as the speaker and question answerer. Let's just say he went over big. Another of those phone calls to help a good cause. Now, look who is back with us. We are happy to welcome the Padre back. PICKUPS-- "To Mother" Deep in each heart God puts the need Of a love that is tender and strong. The need of one who will understand Each sorrow and share each song And to us all, He grants one gift Sweeter than any other. To answer this need for tenderness, He gives us each a "Mother" by the Padre Shamrocks Win Opener From Dundee, 7-5 Baseball is here again, and the McHenry Shamrocks started the season with a victory. We have some new faces on the team and should have a real fine season. Sunday, behind the five hit pitching of Russ Cox and Phil Schmitt, and the hitting of Bill Funk (3-5) and Denny Gibson (2-5) we remained in front of Dundee all the way. Sunday, May 9 we open our home season against Johnsburg.. We will have Mayor Doherty on hand to throw out the first ball. We hope to see a good crowd for this game. As you baseball fans know this game is usually a real battle and this year should be no exception. Will we see you at the A. P. Freund Field Sunday, May 9 at 2 p.m.? McHenry S AB B. Harris, ss 4 B. MCHS BASEBALL TEAM LOSES TWO GAMES AT ZION The MCHS baseball team lost a double-header at Zion 8-5 and 12-2 as both teams did more than usual hitting. Just when the McHenry team finally started to hit, the pitching went haywire. Meyers hurt his arm in the second inning of the first game and Parks finished in good style. Freund had trouble finding the plate in the second game as Zion rapped out 14 hits for a one-sided victory. Barrington comes to McHenry on Saturday of this week for two games. If any boy does not hear from his manager by May 12th please givd me a call and I will check into it. We have 286 boys to place on teams and it's possible to slip up some where along the line. However, we can assure every boy who registered that he will be assigned to a team. The season will get under way May 14th. As soon as we have all the teams selected and the schedule approved it will appear in the Plaindealer. As in other years, we will have the schedules and rosters printed on hard cards for each individuals use. They will be available in a couple of weeks. The field is in the best shape ever and there hdve been, numerouse improvements made. There is still some painting to be done and a little clean up work to do and I think we have a beautiful ball park. Come on out to see if you don't think so, too. Late Flash Little League President, A1 Olson, announced last night that next Tuesday evening (May 11th) commencing at 6 p.m., the annual Little League clean up will start. JIM PETERSEN REMINDS YOU OF BOOSTER MEETING To remind you again of the meeting Monday, May 10, 1965, 8:00 p.m. at James Petersen's, 3903 W. Kane Avenue, to organize the McHenry Shomrock Booster Club. This organization it is hoped would renew the interest and support of a town baseball team. As some of you know we have been sponsored by 19 business men in McHenry for a long time. We have appreciated this financial help greatly. However, when our expenses increase each year we cannot expect these 19 business men to pay the full bill. This year we have come up with an idea that we hope will keep a baseball team in the McHenry County League., As you.walk through town you will see decals in the shape of a Shamrock with the words McHenry- Booster printed on them. These people have made a donation to the McHenry Shamrocks. The idea behind this is the hope that if all the people in McHenry help us a little, 19 businesses will not be forced to spend a large amount each year for the town baseball team. As this name indicates it is a team representing all of the McHenry area. If you are at all interested in helping us please attend this meeting so that work can be started in the organization of the McHenry Shamrocks Boosters. Mayor Doherty and Mr. Earl Walsh have made plana to attend this meeting--how about you? If you would like more information please call James Petersen, Secretary of the McHenry Shamrocks Baseball Team at 385-4471. If you have a suggestion please bring it and yourself to the meeting.
