Thursday, May 20, 1965 UNIT 491 by Mary Einspar McHenry Unit 491, Junior Auxiliary, members attended the eleventh annual Junior conference of the Department of Illinois May 15 at the University of Illinois, Urbana. The meeting was called to order by Miss Rose Marie Loparco, department Junior Activities chairman. Miss Louanne Florin, Junior department chairman, was introduced by Miss Loparco and presided over the remainder of the meeting. The invocation was given by Miss Meri Earing of District 17. Following the pledge of allegiance, the National Anthem and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary, Miss Lesta Mae Ferry gave an address of welcome. The minutes of the 1964 conference were read and the treasurer's report accepted. Mrs. Gwendolyn Boyd, department president, welcomed the girls, praising them for the many projects they have endeavored this past year. Mrs. Boyd stated she was pleased to see so many present and wished the members a very successful convention. National Legislative chairman Mrs. Rae Shaw explained briefly how a bill is really brought before the Legislature. She distributed phamphlets explaining how a thought may develop into a law finally passed by Congress. Miss "Illinois Poppy of 1964" led the new contestents for this year to the stage. She was just a little bit of a thing and told of how the poppies were made. Her plea, "Please buy a Poppy, thank you" was irresistible. There are approximately twenty-five entrants in the contest this year and one will be chosen to reign as "Miss Illinois Poppy of 1965". There are presently 7,794 Junior Auxiliary members enrolled in Illinois. Our Eleventh district currently has 808 members. McHenry unit's share of this is 121. A citation was presented to the Eleventh district for having six members over 100 per cent. Awards were given for contests on Americanism, Civil Defense, Community Service, Membership, Foreign Relations, Child Welfare, Rehabilitation and National Security. McHenry unit's Junior, Cherly Fenner, won first place in the Foreign Relations doll dressing contest in her age group. The Junior members presented toys to Mrs. Buelah Unfer, department Child Welfare chairman, for the children at Lincoln and Dixon schools. Three large stuffed animals were presented by the McHemy Juniors. A check was also presented by the Junior Auxiliary Of McHenry Unit 491 for the department presidents' special project, motorized wheelchairs for Hines Hospital. Representing our Juniors from McHenry were Junior Secretary Kathy Durkin, Junior Treasurer Marianne Einspar, Debbie ' Pickett and Linda Hachmeister. The girls were accompanied by Junior Activities Chairman Mary Einspar and Lee Hachmeister. BIRD CLUB TO ENJOY HIKE IN BULL VALLEY AREA An abundance of spring warblers, the small beautifully colored birds now migrating through this area to their northern nesting grounds, were the center of attention of the Mc Henry County Bird Club on its field trip last Saturday. This annual hike through the Mor ton Arboretum at Lisle, 111., is always a highlight of the club's yearly program since so many birds are seen there, and because the extensive collections of trees, shrubs and vines growing there make it a beautiful place to visit. Plans were finalized for the club's joint with the Bull Valley Garden Club's conservation committee at the Garden Club's spring flower show. The display will emphasize the Bluebird and will include an assortment of man-made birdhouses. The regular monthly meeting will be held on Saturday, May 22. All members and guests planning to attend are asked to meet at the Cold Springs Schoolhouse home of Mrs. Kenneth Fiske at 9 for a hike in the Bull Valley area. As Mrs. Fiske, president of the Bird Club, has pointed out, the McHenry county hiking areas offer some of the best birding opportunities in this part of Illinois. Last spring sixty-three species were seen on a walk down Cold Springs Road. For further information of this meeting call Mrs. William Carroll, Jr. or Mrs. Ralph Peacock. During the four years of World War II. more lhan 390.- 000 Americans lost their lives in battle. During the same four years, however, the Illinois Heart Association points out, 2,300,000 Amoriorms died of heart and blood vessel diseases.
