Mertiorial day can «Jso set us thinking some other sobering, aand timely, thoughts.'"^* Here are a few from the Illinois Heart Association; In just one year (1963) the number of Americans who died from cardiovascular diseases (981,680) exceeded the n14paber killed in all the wars of our country's history -- from- the Revolutionary War right down through the Korean War (602,339). . Wars take from us the flower of our young men; heart disease too is no respecter of youth. ' ^ In the military age bracket, 317,500 were rejected»Jor service in World War II because of cardiovascular ailrwnt, and 40,000 more during the twelve months of recruit ing.]"Joy the Korean conflict. An additional 90,000 were given disability discharges from the Armed Forces because of these ailments. Almost 50 percent of all deaths in the 45-64-year age bracket result from diseases of the heart and blood vessels. The Public Health Service has estimated that cardiovascular diseases cost industry at least $4 billion in terms of lost output per year. It is impossible, of course, to put a price on the anguish, pain and family disrpution due to the toll taken by the heart and blood vessel diseases among men and women in the peak years of their lives. These diseases "cut across all lines of race and economic status. No home, no person is immune. So perhaps this is as good a time as any to expand the "Drive Carefully" warnings issued on the eve of each Memorial Day holiday. The law requires that cars over five years old be inspected annually to assure their safety of operation. The Illinois Heart- Association reminds you that the human machine deserves nothing less: an annual check-up by your doctor. NOTICE NOTICE OPEN 11 A.M. TO 11 P.M.
