, i. V ' ^x -J. "" " &J t ~ "t " *r ^ ^ SO I HEAR. .. Our eo-worker, Marie Yegge, whom we like to refer to as an Assistant Sports Editor, gets us off and wmgin' this week with information she gleaned from Pete DiCicco. Pete says that 1965 marks 10 years of Little League baseball in McHenry and, that only four boys are still playing ball regularly in college or semi-pro circles. They are: Bill DiCicco, Austin Peay State College, Clarksville, Term.;, Paul Moxv enz, Wisconsin; Dave Klapperich, Culver Stockton in Missouri; and Vern Peterson at Bradley. Marie also gives us information that Bill DiCicco has been doing some fine pitching for his team. But, like all pitchers, Bill would probably rather talk about a pinch hit home run that he blasted out of the park recently. Wouldn't you know it--this hot weather comes along and the stores start showing fall fashions for ladies. We didn't see the little numbers, but our information comes from a usually reliable source. If we didn't have any other way of knowing summer is here, the T.V. reruns would be a sure sign. Certain Cub fans who make snide remarks about the way our Sox score runs -haven't bothered to call us since the Cubs won that 16-inning game last Sunday on a bases loaded walk that forced in the winning run. Those Cub fans never seem to believe us when we tell them how happy we are to see their team win. We try our best to explain that we want them to play our Sox in the World Series. With Bobby Klaus and Chuck Hiller both playing for the Mets, we would like to get in to a game next week. Not just sure that our schedule will permit. The less said1 about that heavyweight championship fight the better. Just pity the poor guy who paid money to see such a farce. Another Rocky Marciano or Joe Lewis would bring dignity and new fragrance to the fight game. If these tornado warnings keep coming over the air we are going to have to make that southwest corner of our basement more comfortable. The way our White Sox are playing ball it may be time for Walt Freund and yours truly to get in there and straighten things out. Of course, nobody has asked us. MCHS TRACK NOTES -- It is the general opinion that things will soon be looking up in the local track picture. There are some fine sophs and freshmen coming up and the grade school program is getting some real good prospects ready. In review, the varsity won the Grays lake meet 64-53, winning the 880 relay. Pliner, Gelvin, Dimon and M. Zormar piled up first place points. The McHenry Sophs ran away with everything against Grayslake. Lossman was a ball of fire in the Dundee meet. He is a sophomore so watch for some top performances from him in the next two years. WARRIORS PUT BATS AWAY FOR ANOTHERYEAR Coach Bert Hageman's MCHS Warrior baseball team wound up the season with 6 wind against 12 losses, but lost some close ones along the way. Following are some notes on individual performances tl^roughout the season: Roft Amoun led the team in runs scored .and stolen bases. Rich Soda led the team in hitting - conference .352. Jim Meyers was second in hitting (.333), led in hits with 15, also led in RBI's and base on balls. Pitchers -- Ron Parks, Tim Freund, Jim Meyers, Dave F. Smith. By the end of the year Parks emerged as the most consistent hurler. Wayne Hiller and John Michels did a fine job at shortstop and second base respectively -- good defense down the middle. Terry Miller handled third adequately and came on strong near the end of the season. Tom Wiles and Craig Keith did a fine job defensively in the outfield. Jim Herman filled in at catcher and outfield positions. Dennis Blake -- No, 1 pinch hitter and 1st base. Ken Laurence -- 1st base -- tried 110% all the time though he had trouble at the plate. Juniors who helped out but did not letter -- Bruce Potratz, Dave L. Smith -- managers Gerry Glosson, Darnell Jones. 1965 Varsity Baseball Record McHenry 4; Mundelein 2» McHenry 3 Woodstock 0 McHenry 1; Dundee 4 McHenry 2; Crystal Lake 3 McHenry 4; Larkin 5 McHenry 1; Dundee 2 McHenry 5; Zion Benton 8 McHenry 2; Zion Benton 12 McHenry 6; Woodstock 3 McHenry 1: Libertyville 5 McHenry 5; Liberty ville 0 McHenry 2; Wauconda 6 McHenry 8; Elgin 12 McHenry 2; North Chicago 8 McHenry 11; North Chicago 4 McHenry 4; Crystal Lake 5 McHenry 0; Barrington 5 McHenry 2; Barrington 1 Season Record: 6 wins; 12 losses. This time it was from a trap on number 2. • Carol Cooney proved that if a golfer has skill, she'll get those birdies regardless of how new she is to the McHenry Country Club course.
