.Thursday, Juno 3, 1965 HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS .. >- • PHONE SCHEDULES "A filing of new intrastate long distance schedules by Illinois Bell Telephone is the first step in a series of rate adjustments being negotiated by the Illinois Commerce Commission Which would make possible annual customer savings of about $6,160,000. These savings, added to those resulting from other intrastate and interstate rate changes since 1961, would bring the total to more than $22,- 000,000. .The new long distance rates are filed to be effective on June 19. Hours during which reduced rates are in efect are extended. They would be the same as those now in effect for interstate long distance. Lowest rates would apply any time on Sunday, and after 8 p.m. on other days. Thus the maximum rate for a three-minute station . cal within Illinois during any of these periods would be 50 cents. Saturday day station rates alSo would be reduced. ' The new method of measuring distances, made possible by the advent of computer technology, would be used to determine long distance charges. The intrastate station "mileage" steps also would be adopted for person-to-person calling. These changes would involve some minor increases and decreases in station and personto- person rates, mostly of a nickel or a dime, it was pointed out. In McHenry approximately 14 per cent of the mileage steps would decrease, 1 per cent would increase and 85 per cent would remain the samp on station-to-station calls. . No increases or decreases would exceed five cents. For example, a station call from McHenry to Crystal Lake would decrease from 15 to 10 cents, and' Belvidere, from 35 to 30 cents. A station call from McHenry to South Beloit would increase from 35 to 40 cents. It was pointed out that there have been two reductions for many interstate calls this year --one on Feb. 1 and another on April 1. Total annual user savings from all long distance rate adjustments, including the intrastate reductions, are expected to be nearly $9,000,000 for Illinois users. Here are some examples of how the new rate schedules would work: The charge for a McHenry to Rock Island, three-minute, station call from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, would be reduced from 50 to 40 cents. The charge for a McHenry to Alton, three-minute, station call on Saturday during the day would be reduced from 90 to 70 cents. SAL RUSSO Sal. J. In another compartment of the shoe bag put some pipe cleaners; shaping them into animals, flowers, etc., can keep a child happy for many miles.
