At present, Jody is a freshman in McHenry high school where her activities include Pep club, F.H.A. and G.A.A. Two uncles were members of the Cavaliers drum corps and her mom and dad were junior drum corps members as youngsters. Mr. Osmon is now instructor of the Viscounts and Vi-Kettes. Eileen Cooper, 15, has eight years of service with the Viscounts to her credit. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cooper of 6620 W. Rt. 120. Now a freshman in McHenry high school, Eileen is a member of the GAA and Pep club. Eileen's hobbies include swimming, horseback riding, roller skating and dancing. Both her father and mother have served as president of the Parents' Association. NEWS OF JUNIOR HIGH Seat Do you ever have the feeling that you are lacking in words which will adequately express your thoughts? Most people do. One of the areas in which weaknesses are found in students is vocabulary. This year the teachers in the English department of jthe Junior high school are attempting to upgrade the vocabulary of all students. In addition to teaching the student to appreciate the volume of reading for story and its development, the teachers are stressing reading for depth. The vocabulary used in the textbook often seems to escape the students; therefore the overall reading picture can become distorted, and the students lose much of the educational benefits which should be derived from reading. One theory of reading specialists seems to be that the improvement of vocabulary willautomatically benefit the students in all courses of study. Therefore it seems advisable to devote more attention to vocabulary building. Each week students will be given vocabulary tests which will consist of words taken from their reading experience of that week. Records and tapes will be incorporated into the study in order to acquaint the students with words and their usage in everyday speech. If you would like to lend assistance in this program, encourage the student -to use the dictionary at home. HOSPITAL TO HOST blNNER FOR PRESS DEC. 2 The daily service of Memorial hospital for McHenry county and the important role newspapers, radio and television plays in keeping the public informed will be featured at a unique meeting on Dec. 2. Bert Hanson, administrator of the 100-bed hospital that serves citizens from every township of McHenry county, has announced plans for a dinner for members of the press and radio in early December. In a letter inviting representatives of the press to become acquainted with board members, Hanson said the dinner is designed to serve several purposes. It will be a "thank you" to the press for diligent coverage of news which involves activities at the hospital including services provided by the hospital without charge to the public, and the role a good hospital occupies in a community. Reports on future growth requirements at Memorial hospital will be outlined by Jack Byers; president of the board of directors.
