Seems strange to see the things you've read about in school. H6w the Romans over 2,000 years ago achieved what they did seems almost impossible; and we think we're an advanced civilization. Will see you all in 4 weeks." It sounds as tho Jim is having an enjoyable trip. Ringwood Church News Vacation church school will have a program take the place • of church worship on Sunday ! at 10 a.m. Parents are most cordially invited to come and see what your children have , been doing for the past two weeks. Following the program there will be a pot-luck dinner for. children and parents. There will be no church school either. Do come and join us. The Sr. High M.Y.F. meets at 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. This includes the senior high youth from Mt. Hope, McHenry and "the Ringwood churches. They will be in charge of the ice cream booth on the church grounds on Ringwood Day, which is coming up in the near future. They also will have a surprise or two for you. Ringwood Day, August 28, "will be a day to mark on your calendar. There will be a display by the historical society, a tour and history of "some of the older homes in town, and the opportunity to purchase note paper that will have sketches of some of these places on it. These pictures will be (drawn by our own local artists. If you have anything that you think would be of special interest, contact Rev. Ronald Anderson or Mrs. Doris Low. Achievement Night Held The Ringwood Sunshine Girls 4-H Club and the Wonder Lake Wonder Workers 4-H Clubs held a joint annual achievement night on Wednesday evening in the Ringwood Methodist church basement. The leaders of the Wonder Lake group are Mrs. Jay Cristy and Mrs. Joe Sullivan. For Ringwood, they are Mrs. J. P. Walkington and Mrs. Harold Jepson Jr. The Sunshine Girls' President, Diane Cristopher, gave the welcome followed by Dolores Betts who led the pledge to the flag and the 4-H pledge. Diane then introduced Donna Smeltzer, who demonstrated her prize winning food demonstration of braided yeast coffee cake, which she will be taking to the Illinois state fair for demonstration. Donna also is one of the Queen Candidates for 4-H queen at the county fair in Woodstock next month. The program continued with a style review of the^garments made by the combined groups with each girl modeling h er outfit. Mary Lee Wight of the Wonder Workers and Resae Ackerman of the Sunshine girls announced the girls , and described their outfits. Michele Ackerman played background music for the girls. The Wonder Workers led all in .songs and a game or two between performances. The mothers and guests were welcome to look over the girls' entrants in food, candle making and sewing, for the coming fair. Refreshments were served to all. The girls made cookies and served punch also. It was such a wonderful turnout for the girls, with so many mothers in attendance. Around Town Miss Dorie Maryanowski and friend of Chicago were Sunday callers in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Harrison. On Wednesday, Mrs. Stan Knell and Mrs. Mike Knell of Walworth and Mrs. Allen Ainger and son, David, of Hebron along with Mrs. Ruby Shepard were visitors in Elgin. Mr. and Mrs. Wolf Shadle visited Mrs. Rose Auerbach in Crystal Lake on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Soddy of Kenosha, Wis., called on Mrs. Nellie Hepburn on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Hawley attended a birthday party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Swanson at Wonder Lake on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Bruce and daughter, Cindy, and Miss Juanita Ackerman attended the wedding of Laura Lucid'o and Timothy McNally in Dallas, Texas, last week. Cynthia helped serve the wedding cake. Juanita helped with the guest book. They also spent a few days with his mother at Opdyke. Last week, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Mahr of Batavia stopped at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wolf Shadle for a brief visit. On Tuesday, Mr. and Mrs. Fleiner of Chicago called on Mrs. Nellie Hepburn .Mrs. Cathill of Lake Geneva and her daughter, Mrs. Rose of Canada, called on Mrs. Hepburn on Thursday. Some of our local 4-H girls who are spending this week at Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See are, Noreen and Pam Bauer, Marie Galli, Patty Brennan, Resae Ackerman and Lynn Thomlinson. They left at 7 a.m. Monday morning from the Home Bureau building in Woodstock in three chartered buses and will be coming home on Friday. They were thrilled and anxious to enjoy their "vacation". The Happ'nen starts at 8:30 p.m. in the Waukegan high school football stadium on Lewis avenue, one block north of Washington Street, Waukegan. Stagg is only one of many stars that will appear, according to the sponsors, the Waukegan Federation of Musicians. As you know the Women's auxiliary will handle the kitchen detail. They have planned a special Friday menu along with the regular plate lunch. Sunday, July 31, the women have planned a delicious baked ham lunch. The new attraction for the auxiliary this year will be the bakery booth offering Wonder Lake's finest homemade pies and cakes. Pilgrimage Cancelled It has become necessary to. cancel the planned parish pilgrimage sponsored by the past presidents club of the Christ the King church. House And Garden Walk This year the Kiwanis club will sponsor the annual Wonder Lake House and Garden Walk. The net proceeds will be used for Girl Scout activities. The walk will be held August 19 and 20. The homes will be open from 10:30 to 3:30. Included will be the Kasper Ehlen home in Sunrise Ridge, the Herbert White residence in Wooded Shores and the Russ Belshaw's home in Wonder Woods. Luncheon will be served at the Russ Belshaw grounds. Additional information will be announced later as well as the location of the bazaar and the white elephant booths. The Kiwanis club will man boats for the boat rides. HIGHWAY BEAUTIFICATION Illinois is one of the first states in the nation to obligate its portion of federal funds allocated to the various states for highway beautification purposes, Gov. Otto Kerner has announced. He said that a report from Public Works Director Francis S. Lorenz shows that Illinois has obligated $2,996,255 of a total of $3,000,000 in federal funds allocated to the state for the beautification program. The major portion of the total allotment in Illinois will be used to construct rest stops on primary highways throughout the state. PLAY NEWSPAPER BINGO LAKE COUNTY FAIR IS HELD THIS WEEKEND Lake County's thirty-eighth annual fair opened Wednesday, July 27, and continues through Sunday night, July 31. The fair is held on the Lake county fair grounds, located at the junction of Routes 45 and 120, about 10 miles west of Waukegan and 1 mile east" of Grayslake. Thursday's, program will inc l u d e j u d g i n g o f v a r i o u s classes during the day and the crowning of the 1966 fair queen in the evening, followed by a Talented Teen variety program. Judging of beef and sheep and an all day western and Appaloosa horse show will compromise Friday's main daytime events. The daytime program tor Saturday includes a western horse show and the public auction of champion steers, wethers, and barrows. At 7 p.m. will be the grand parade of livestock, farm machinery, automobiles led by Miss Lake County Fair Queen of 1966.
