THE McHKNHY PLAINDEALEH Thursday, July 28,198#- <1 MCCULLOM LAKE NEWS EYE LEVESQUE SS5-S191 CROWN LITTLE MISS McCULLOM LAKE SATURDAY The "count down" has begun on the annual summer festival which will be held Saturday, July 30, starting at noon and Is highlighted by the selection of Miss McCullom Lake at 7 p.m. There will be games and „ amusements for all age brackets. Refreshments will be available. One attraction which always proves popular is the "tasty pastry" sale and this is being handled by Lois Parents Contestants for the Miss McCullom Lake contest are rehearsing tonight (Thursday) at the beach at 7 pm- Mrs. Gerry Jensen will be showing the little girls from 4 to 7 years = old, the line of march around ; the basketball court. They will then line up in front of the judges when a final selection will be made. According to Mrs. Jensen, if you have not already registered your child for the contest, there is time to do so tonight. The wee ones "will congregate at the home of Mrs. Jensen at 6 p.m. Saturday night and will be assigned to a convertible and then will be driven around the village prior to showing up at the beach for the final judging. The youngsters make an adorable sight in tiny bathing suits and are well worth watching. It is a mighty hard task for the judges and they have our sympathy! A new feature has been added to the festivities this year and that is the "blind auction". Merchandise for the sale may be left at £hy of the three business tstablishments which dispense food and drink. In addition to the many act i v i t i e s a v a i l a b l e on t h e grounds, there will also be beer and refreshment stands. The Cullom-Knoll Association is sponsoring the annual event with Ken Betts and Mickey Murray serving as chairmen. Proceeds from the affair will house facilities. Form Scout Troops Something sadly needed in the village are Boy and Girl Scout troops with dens for Brownie and Cub Scouts, but at long last, a man has come forward and says he will organize these groups. Paul (Bud) Brendle is aware of the need and is going to do something about it. For more information call him at 385-0838. Mr. Brendle also netds adult helpers and if the seven who have offered their help, will come through with action, this problem, too, is solved. Cub packs will be composed of young lads from 7 - 10. Brownies are girls in the same age bracket. Boy and Girl Scouts must be 10 and over. Leaders for each group will be selected and the time for meetings will be scheduled. If you have a little time to devote to this worthy undertaking, please call Bud. We think he deserves verbal orchids for his positive action! tains this team which includes Ed Stacknick, Jr.; Jim Conway; Ed (Speedy) Caron; Donny Powers; Peter John Klapperich; Ted Hocin; John (Doc) Boyle; Tom Bateman and Dick White. ' "Misfits" are captained by Gleeson and appearing on the diamond for him are Tom Olsen; George Scarbrough; Ron Godina; Ken Ingersol; Ken Betts; John Scarbrough; Bud Brendle; Jim Shaffer; Ray (Cowboy) Lary; Don Hayes and Elmer Kanak. During the game, which ended 29 - 25, Don Powers made two hits while nursing a very sore ankle. He managed to limp to first once and to second the next time, and scorekeeper- Gerry Jensen was sent in to run for him. Yep, she made both runs! None of the fellas dartd to tag her out! She does a great job, keeping score, and is the only female tolerated on the team. Jake Levesque stuck his neck out a country mile, but .stuck to his guns, as umpire. Twice, there was almost a rhubarb, but all ended well. A direct quote from the losing team-- "He does a great job behind the plate, and calls them the way he sees them. None better!" Ole Olsen handled the position of umpiring first base, with no controversies. The men are taking up collections among themselves and will give the specatators a chance to contribute. The money will be turned over to the girls' softball teams to purchase new equipment. How 'bout that? For an exciting afternoon, come to the beach at 2 p.m., every Sunday. The men say they will play 'til the snow flies! , Cheering Dads To Victory An impromptu cheering section was hastily organized for the Sunday games and lusty yells come forth from the throats of Kathy 'n' Diane Klapperich; Darlene and Sherry Jensen; Jackie and Corky Whitney; Ami and Laurie Wilson; Lynn Gleeson and Tony Mullen. Keep it up, kids. last week, but. Chief Earl Murray and Officer Ken Loesch deserve honorable mention for their prompt and- efficient method of handling the disturbance. The two men were on the scene in record time, in spite of the very late hour. Our department is the finest! Festival Committee Meets Tonight .. All those who have volunteered to help with the summer festival should meet at the home of Ray Lary--5121 W. Fountain Lane-tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. Final arrangements and the assigning of various duties will be handled at this time. Hospitalized Willard Schultz, who has been a patient at McHenry hospital since July 5 and had surgery a week ago Monday, was scheduled to be releastd Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. He is terribly thin, but Theresa's cooking should fatten him up in a hurry. Everett Ingersol was hospitalized in McHenry for a few days, but was due home early in the week. F o r m e r r e s i d e n t B a r n e y Graff has been confined tp a Florida hospital for three weeks. We know he would be immensely cheered to hear from you. Address your.cards to 4812 31st N. He made the announcement?at the last meeting of the president and trustees, Monday, July 18. Trustees Art Nelson and John Boyle were absent. President Art Stuhlfeier named Boyle to head the finance committee which was vacated by Rich Johnson. Chuck Thacker and Harry Lock will strve with him. The violent storm July 17 which dumped a lot of debris in yards and on the easements, raised a question which is now answered. Each resident is responsible for cleaning up the easements. The village does not have funds for this work. The next meeting will be held Monday. Aug. 1. at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. The public is invited. Southern Hiatus Betty and Htrb Roeske and the youngsters, Linda and Bud, came home last Thursday after a leisurely trip through Kentucky, which began the previous Thursday. They viewed the gold depository at Fort Knox but were not allowed admittance. (No free samples* either!) The family carted their camping gear in a trailer and enjoyed the out of doors. Instant College Course, John Boyle, Sr., has been having a great tim,e acquiring a college degree-ins tnta style. He has been attending psychology courses at Knox College in Galesburg. His place of employment is underwriting the cost. Lorraine, John, Jr., and Bobby have been keeping the home fires burning. Would You Believe? Patrons at the Forum and Wee Willie's were shocked into sobriety the other p.m. when they actually saw a horse in both places! No joke, it really happened. The beautiful animal, Cimarron--owned by Carol and Tom Bateman was led around by Bill Walter. He dreamed up the idea, and then followed through. The very well behaved animal was properly admired. He didn't ruin the tile floors either, since he is not shod. Orchid Occasions Humble apologies for missing the first wedding anniversary for Ginny and Ted Hocin, July 22. Shot Series Terminated Three year old Louanne Kroneke, who was bitten by a rabid skunk several weeks ago, received her last shot Saturday, which ended a 25 day ordeal for her. The youngster was forced to undergo the treatment when the animal which bit her, was proved rabid by laboratory tests. Police Quell Disturbance No charges were preferred against young men who caused a disturbance at a local home Wi Men's Softball Team "Catches Fire"! The second game beteewn rival teams--the "Fits" and tht "Misfits" took place last Sunday, and was viewed by a large crowd. Enough antics took place to fill a volume, but we'll try and give you a few highlights, but better yet, come and watch them, this Sunday, and every week thereafter. Before we proceed, let's correct an error. Ron Godina gets credit for the unusual name, and not Bill Gleeson, as reported. The teams are sponsored by the two taverns in the village, and competition runs high. So far, the "Fits" are deserving of their name, having won both games.
