fkcttoo One,--Page Four THE; McHENRY PIiATN ii*KAI<KB Thursday* July 28* 1966 SO I HEAR McHenry Cheerleaders ^ Return FrontS; • \ m Annual Cheerleading School { By: Earl Walsh Dr. Lyle Franzen was back in the old home town a week ago and came in for, a chat. "Line-OType Lyle" was a great typesetter for the Plaindealer ih the Mosher era. It seemed he never hit a wrong key and connected mistakes on copy as he went along. On Sunday we met an old friend of long standing, Ailccn O'Reilly. You wouldn't know her by her married name and anyhow it escapcs us for the moment. We would have enjoyed more time to review earlier days in McHenry. As we recall, Aileen was clever with the pen. Do any of you old graids of McHenry High have the poem she wrote about John McCarthy, the school janitor? Think it was in a school year book: We would like to read it again. Speaking of forgetting names, if we meet you and know you but cannot recall your name, think nothing of it. We used to use the trick of going through the alphabet to get the name. Now, doggone it we think they changed the alphabet. Guess there is no need mentioning the Sox victory over the Cubs Monday night so we won't even mention that the score was 5 to 4. We have a very close friend who has been a Sox fan all his life, but now wants us to join him for a Cub game. We won't mention his name until he gets himself straightened around. It looks like the greatest trade of the age was Baltimore's snatching of slugger Frank Robinson from Cincinnati. How nice he would look in a Sox uniform. Looks like the Orioles will run away and hide on their chasers in the American League race. We are still getting help in the mail for our book. Such' help! WMIK A number of cheerleaders from McHenry High School returned from a week of work and study at the 13th Annual Summer Cheerleading School at Illinois State University. Shown in attendance at the school (from left to right) are: Paula Parker and Janet Hansen. In the middle from top to bottom are: Maria Fisher, Lois Hansen and Margie Ruth. Not shown is Kandy Thompson as she was attending girl's state. The traditional summer clinics are offered by ISU, at the request of high school officials, in an effort to improve sportsmanship at athletic events as well as to provide the latest instruction in cheerleading techniques Dr. Eugene Hill, ISU professor of physical education and clinic director reports that a capacity group of 525 students were registered in advance for the three one-week sessions (June 12-17, June 19- 24, and June 26 - July 1). L. R. Herkimer of Dallas, Texas, who provides the instructional staff for the clinics through the National Cheerleaders Association, personally directed some of the classes during the first week. Daily classes and mass demonstrations were held in Horton Field House or in the University High School gymprogram included opportunities for swimming and a special clinic dinner and program during the week. Heard one time that Joe Stanek was building up to run for Governor of the State of Illinois. A fellow told us this week that Joe toured down to Springfield to look things over. He plans to redecorate the Governor's mansion. All we know is what we hear. Roger Haggi, out of Lake Villa, won the hard way when he rolled his 1957 Chev. Roger was a little shaken up, but was unhurt. There is quite a battle between the Illinois and Wisconsin drivers each week and our McHenry boys are really giving the Wisconsin drivers a lot of competition. The Speed way has a special race for the "Family Cars". These are cars that are right off the street, and must be equipped with seat belts and the hub caps removed. Instead of having all the fast driving on the streets of McHenry, why not take your car up to Wilmot Saturday night and drive it on the race track where they guarantee that you won't get a ticket for speeding. Remember, 'You don't have to. drive fast to enjoy fast driving'. Red Cross Safety Services now has four publications on safe boating. The other three are "Basic Outboard Boating", "Basic Rowing," and "Basic Canoeing". The four booklets were prepared both for use in American Red Cross small craft courses and also as excellent reference works on safe boat-handling for persons engaged in boating as a sport, but who do not take formal instruction. Therefore, they merit wide circulation as aids to safe boating. The new American Red Cross text includes "sailing instructions, safety precautions on the water, and a comprehensive glossary of nautical terms. Its 122 pages are liberally illustrated with pictures of sailboat gear and sailing techniques. Recommended as a reference book for sailboat enthusiasts, it may be obtained at the McHenry County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 104y2 Benton Street, Woodstock, Illinois. The growing popularity of skin and scuba diving today prompted Jean Hartung, water safety chairman of the Red Cross in McHenry County, to issue some safety suggestions for persons engaging in the two sports. The Number One safety tip for both skin and scuba diving is -- always swim with a companion. The one practice that Wlmot Racers Excite Fans Mike Wolf of Lake Villa came from the fourteenth starting spot to win the action filled feature race at the Wilmot Speedway. The rugged action started on the second lap when Roger Hagi, also of Lake Villa, took a fast, hard, double rollover trying to take the lead going into the west turn. Hagi was released after a check-up and is in good condition. On the restart things went well until the 12th lap when Dick Aissen spun and hit Allan Gutchie, pushing him into the outside wall where his car caught .on fire. Gutchie, of Kenosha, was unharmed. The race was won by Mike Wolf. Harold Gutchie was second, Dick Aissen, third, Jim Steckling, fourth, and Chuck Davis fifth.
