He comes from Minneapolis every summer for this special visit with his devoted sister. They enjoyed dinners out at some of our famous restaurants and also did some fishing and boating down the river. And for the weekend some friends from Des Plaines, George * Bahr, and family came out to join the party which included a barbecue but all participants retired to the indoors to eat, due to weather conditions. A Beautiful Wedding It Was Chea. and I were honored to be able to take part in a very fabulous wedding of Ches's niece, Verna Welsh, who was married to James Gembeck, both of North Lake. The wedding took place at the St. John's Vianny Catholick church in North Lake near the bride and groom's homes with Father Edward Boyle officiating. The reception was held in the hall joining the church which was elegantly trimmed for the occasion and an orchestra filled the air with beautiful love ballads. Delicious food of many varieties was served by a. caterer. Relatives from McHenry who attended were Miss Violet Crowley, Agnes Crowley, Tom Smith and daughter (who recently returned from a trip abroad) Bill McGinnis all of Johnsburg, and Laura Crowley from McHenry. Hospitalized Our little Suzie Benoche is still in the hospital, the result of an automobile accident. She is a lucky gal as it could have been much worse judging from the condition of the demolished car she was driving. All her friends and neighbors are hoping her stay at the hospital will be brief so she can catch up with the classes at school. Celebrations The Pflugs celebrated two birthdays in the family this month . Cindy was 9 years old on Sept. 7 and Cathy 12 on Sept. 22. Mom and Pop decided to do a little celebrating also but not birthdays. They made reservations at an inn in French Lick, Ind., where they will spend a week playing golf, riding horses boat- • Uig, fishing, and some night clubbing. Ball Game It was Ladies day at Sox Park last Saturday which enticed many nuns to attend the game including our own Caral Mecko, (Sister Maria del Ray) who is teaching school in Chicago. Her father joined her for the game and also brought her home with him to spend the day with the family. Briefs The LaBay family spent last weekend in Michigan with Grandma and other relatives. The Lehmans attended another wedding last week in a Chicago church where Betty's nephew was united in marriage. Edy's brother, Griff, of New York spent a week with them. The family gathered at Rolling Meadows where a reunion was in progress in the nature of a picnic. Irma and family had a grand time at her company's picnic in Fox River Grove last Saturday. Foods and refreshments were plentiful for children and adults. LaMar Williams and Kasperski returned home after spending a weekend in St. Louis with relatives Dolly and Jim Blackwell. Dangerous Some dead elm trees are standing erect in Sunnyside at the moment but one never knows when the storms will come and blow them down on nearby houses which is very hazardous for our y^ieople in the village. OWner sof property should cut them down in order to make things safe for their neighbors. Most of our school children take precautions when walking to the bus. And then there are a few who ignore the fact that cars do v need room to get to their destination. Visiting Family Jerry Ripley is home on a 2 week furlough from Ft. Polk. He is being transferred to an undetermined location when he returns to his present base. So this is it for this week - be good to your neighbor. Surprise Anniversary Dinner A surprise party was held at the home of Midge and Don Teuber in honor of the thirty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Menig, Midge's folks. Mementoes of years gone by including Mrs. Menig's wedding dress were on hand to add to the occasion. Enjoying the celebration were Ben Glassman of Skokie, the Merle Millers of Barrington, Ann Menig and Aunt Elizabeth Malone. U There's a difference of opinion here. Both of these Little Leaguers stand ready to put up a good argument, even though it is a foregone conclusion that the "ump" is going to win. But w^en the game is over, differences will be forgotten and umpire and catcher will go down to the drug store together for a banana split. In doing so, they will be reflecting something that is a basic part of our heritage -- the ability to lose, without holding a grudge . . . the ability to yield. These are qualities important not only to sportsmanship but to life. And this importance is stressed in the most powerful of terms again and again throughout the Bible. 4 Little Leaguers learn the rules of sportsmanship -- and of life -- in one way on the' playing field and in another, deeper way when they attend church with their families on Sunday. Are you taking your Little Leaguer to church? THE CHURCH FOR ALL ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily.
