Twice Told Tales Forty Years Ago " (Taken from the 'lies of ^ Oct. 7, 1926) St. Mary's church at Woodstock was the scene of one of the most beautiful fall weddings on Oct. 6. when Mr. , George Phalin of McHenry and Miss Agnes Peter of Woodstock were married before a large assembly of relatives and friends. The members of the James B. Perry Fortress No. II. Daughters of the G.A.R., met at the M.W.A. hall, West McHenry, Oct. 5. Mrs. Ruby M. Drury, senior commander-in-chief of the National Daughters of Waukegan was present to assist in the work. Two new members were accepted, Mrs. Jeannie Eddy and Mrs. Mae Spencer, which completes the number of members necessary for the charter. A canvass of the business men of McHenry following the big Dollar Day put on by them Oct. 2, showd that the Plaindealer's prediction that this would be "McHenry's Biggest Trading Day" was correct. Thousands of dollars were deposited in the cash registers of the local business places as a result of the combined efforts and exceptional bargains listed by the merchants. Because of the several days rain the work on the new road west of the city, which is apart of route 20, has progressed rather slowly during the past week. The cement mixer is located at Sherman's hill and the forms are being put in and everything is in rediness to begin pouring cement as soon as the road bed dries out. Miss Dorothy Matthews, who has been employed in the Bell Telephone office at Elgin, has been transferred to our local excharigie where she will assist during the shortage in help caused by sickness. Miss Lillian Stilling tias been absent from the switch board for several weeks because of ill health. Twenty-Five Years Ago (Taken from the flies of Oct. 2, 1M1) With the McHenry Community high school in its twenty-third year we wonder how many of our readers recall the struggle necessary to make it the modern institution it is today. The year of 1892 is the earliest that ^ we have any record of high < school graduates in McHenry. Among those receiving diplomas that year were Joel Wheeler and Loretta Walsh. Until 1919 the high school district included only t h e city of McHenry and was supported by the present grade school district. Sept. 20. 1919, a n election was held for the purpose of forming a new high school district. By a vote of 312 to 87 favoring the proposal. With the enlargement of the school district the school boasted ninety students of which thirteen were to become the first graduates of the community high school. Until the erection of the new high school in 1924 the grade and high school classes were held in the same building. C. H. Duker, who came to McHenry in 1922, through his untiring efforts to improve Snow White Dairy located a few miles northeast of town, last week opened law offices in Crystal Lake, in partriership with Harry C. Kinne. Jr., of that city. Mr. and Mrs, Howard Collins and family have moved from the lower flat of the Kathryn Boger house on Waukegan street to the newly constructed home of Joe May on John street. < Several ladies of the Community Methodist church of McHenry drove to Arlington Heights where they attended a luncheon and conference of the sub-district of the Worn- _an's Society for Christian Service. Those who enjoyed the day were Mrs. George Johnson, Mrs. Elmer Baum, Mrs. Charles Ensign and Mrs. Harold Owen. Ten Years Ago . (Tafcen from the files of Sept. 27. 1956) One of the city's oldest business men in years of service to his community at his retirement was Fred Kamholz who died at the home of his daughter in Chicago. He was 83 years old. Seventy-five members of the McHenry's higjh school band under the direction of Paul R. Yanda are making plans to attend the second annual high school band day at Northwestern university. A gun accident last Saturday resulted in injuries to Gustave Holmgren, 48, of Richmond, who was reported in serious condition in St. Luke's hospital. Holmgren was wounded by a stray bullet from a rifle. Roy Jackson of rural McHenry was seriously hurt in an accident Monday evening at the intersections of Rt. 12 and 120 at Volo. Three vehicles were involved in the crash. William Sutton of Sioux Falls, S.D., visited relatives PROFEJJIOnRL DIRECTORS' EARL R. WALSH INSURANCE Fire, Auto, Farm & Life Ins. For this is a time of her life when much can depend on the outcome of these mo ments when she is alone with her thoughts. Decisions will be made -- irrevocable decisions. Steps will be taken that cannot be retraced. The happiness of those who love her hangs in the balance ... as she tries to discover where her own happiness lies. But her thoughts are projections of the lessons she has learned, the experiences she has had. And high among these are the truths she learned in her church life, and the rich experiences she has known with Christian friends who grew up in religious homes. Alone with \Jier thoughts ... this girl is in/good company! THE CHURCH FOR ALL... ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. Then arc four sound reasons why every )>erson should attend services regu larly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2.) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regu larly and read your Bible daily. 1 Copyright 1966 ICtister Advertising Service, Inc., Stratburg, Vfl Sunday Genesis 32:22-30 Monday Psalms 139:1-6 T uesday Isaiah 55:6-9 Wednesday Jeremiah 29:10-14 Thursday Matthew 14:13-23 Friday Mark 4:26-34 Saturday Luke 9:28-36 <SI2> t <Si2> t <332? t <S2? t <S2? t <S±2? t <222? t <3±2? + <£fcZ> t <S±2? t <SiZ> t <5iz> RINGWOOD METHODIST CHURCH Ringwood, minnt» Rev.
