WATER TANK FAILURE " With the water pressure in Lakeland Park falling from before midnight Sunday until 2 a.m. Monday morning, when the water tower tank went empty leaving the total area without the fluid so vital to fire prevention, this writer arid a friend, who were together in his kitchen watching a water pressure gauge he has had for the last ten years called the fire department, police station and one of the Lakeland Park aldermen, advising all of the situation that existed. "This writer stayed awake until 5 a.m. at which time a visit was made to the McHenry police station and an inquiry made of the officer on -duty whom we had reported to at 2 a.m., why something had not happened to get the water back into circulation. He advised that shortly, if the man had not yet arrived, there would be an employee of the Water company, who would investigate. "On my return to Lakeland Park, after 5 a.m. I stopped near the pump house where the pump that supplies the area is installed and met the employee leaving. Upon inquiry, I learned that he had the pump in operation and that water would again be available in the area. He advised me he thought the magnetic switch had apparently opened, shutting off the pump, perhaps due to a voltage drop temporarily. The remedy was simply to close the switch and the pump was again operating. Why should this take four or five hours? "Apparently a lot of questions can be asked. My friend who has the pressure gauge in his kitchen says he h&s been witnessing these similar type water failure for more than ten years. Many will wonder if it is not realized that a lot of people here are worried about the lack of fire protection during these periods that happen much too often? Cari they net install an electric alJtrm that will signal when this ntagnetic switch opens and stops the pump? If could easily light a red light over the pump house (large one) or could notify the fire department by phone automatically. Certainly there are many ways to correct this situation. "R.C. Smith".
