The first alarm was sounded at 10:55 and equipment was rushed to the home of Monica Morris, 5200 block of West Orchard drive, because of smoke coming from the oven. Mrs. Morris had been cooking and she suspected fire because of smoke. The damage was minimal, but she became alarmed because of two previous house fire emergencies. The second call was for a fire at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Watson, 5112 W. East Lane. Mrs. Watson was cooking in a pan when grease in the container caught afire. She panicked and tried to extinguish the flames with the kitchen tap, thereby setting fire to the curtains by the sink. Reserve officer Greg Burg, Jr., heard the alarm on his home radio and rushed to the scene. Sgt. Ken Loesch, who was wSrking nearby, was summoned and the two policemen aided the firemen in directing traffic. According to Fire Chief Ed Justen, damage vyas estimated at between $150 and $200, because of scorch and smoke damage. Fire fighting men and equipment were on the scene for about 15 or 20 minutes. A man must have a certain amount of intelligent ignoranfee! to get anywhere. / - PLAINDEALEg - FRi. MAR. 22, 1968 I M C My mother is rather remarkable as a medical case for she illustrates the value of keeping your brain and body in daily action! America's foremost physiologist, Dr. A.C. Ivy, predicts we shall be able to reach 120 years as our average longevity if we avoid sabotaging our human machine. And if we also supply it with the vital chemical raw materials. By - George W. Crane, Ph. D...M.D. CASE F-541: Jeannie Crane, aged 90, is my mother. She lives in a little Hoosier village near which we have our summer home on the farm. So whenever I am down there I usually drive into town to visit her in the evening and read the newspaper. On this particular evening, she was lying down. "What's the matter?" Iaskied. "This is too early for you to be in bed!" She apologized, saying she was unduly tired, due to a heavy day. "I cleaned house all morning," she added. " Then I got dressed to go to our church Women's society meeting. "But I walked over there (3 blocks), so I stopped to visit a little while with Tom and Effie Taylor. (Tom and Effie were members of the wedding party when my mother and father were married nearly 68 years ago). "And before I got to the church, I met Maude Cooper on the street so we talked till I was almost late for the meeting. "But Fm glad I went, for Rachel Carlson gave a wonderful talk. She had some very interesting ideas, so I asked to borrow the magazine she had used. " But by the time I got home and prepared the meal for Vick and me, I felt worn out." Victor, aged 84, is my uncle and the bachelor brother of my mother. He lives on the farm across the road from the summer place but always goes into the village to dine with her and spend the night, for she is afraid to stay alone. The main reason I mentioned my» mother's varied activities at the advanced age of 90, is to show if you elderly folks wish to remain active, you must keep active! Not only does metal machinery rust when standing idle but our bodily machinery likewise gets stiff and our brain cells stagnant unless we keep in daily action. My mother attended Valparaiso university and then Indiana State Teachers university 74 years ago. She is probably one of the oldest living alumnae of both those schools. But she has always been culturally oriented and an especially devout church woman. She had read through the entire Bible 72 times from cover to cover, 15) to 20 years ago. Now she "spot reads" it, like the usual clergyman. And she might be called a "sucker" for humanitarian appealis, for she routinely sends money to support Korean orphans, Boys Town and similar worthy projects. In our childhood, she referred us children to the encyclopedia in our bookcase, and to the textbook by William James pioneer Americanpsychologist. Medically, I give her and Uncle Vick a daily liver and iron ampule, that contains multiple vitamins and minerals. And also a tea spoonful of concentrated sea water, for the possible Value of its 44 trace chemicals. Like typical older folks, she relishes dining out and seeing new sights. These extra meals are also helpful, for she doesn't always cook as varied a menu as she sould. But she relishes entertaining company and thus maintains her own home, which is good as long as she can hobble around therein. Send for my booklet on "The Ocean's0 44 Trace Chemicals*' enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 20 cents. (Always write to Dr. Crane in care of this newspaper, enclosing a long stamped addressed 6nvelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.)
