CULLOM LAKE NEWS EVE LEVESQUE 885-4141 MAN RESCUED • FROM BROWNING IN McCULLOM LAKE The combined efforts of Mrs. Hay (Elizabeth) Fisher, the McHenry police and fire, departments succeeded in saving Harold Schaeffer's life last Thursday as he plunged into the icy waters of the lake while ice fishing. Details of the story appeared in Wednesday's issue of the Plaindealer. Mrs. Fisher became alarmed as she watched Harold and a companion on the dangerous ice which was breaking up rapidly because of thawing conditions. His companion left in safety and Harold continued his winter sport until the ice refused to hold him and he fell through, about an hour after walking out on the ice. Elizabeth notified the Mc- Hehry police, who in turn, alerted the fire department, and they answered the call. The \ Smiiiy's Auto Topics by George Smith If your car coasts along like the road was covered with glue, wanders from side to side and makes you a big gallonage customer at the filling station, it's time for a front wheel bearing check-up. These are hard working parts and awfully important. "Aren't they in the hub of the wheels holding the most weight that lead you down the highways at great speed?" Let'em lead you to Smitty's Sinclair Service at 3602 W. Elm street so we can give you more details. We use the proper tools to completely replace the old lubricant with new, and carry a complete stock of parts in case replacements are necessary. The tank or two of gasoline you'll save in the next, few thousand miles you drive will more than pay for this inexpensive servicing job. Drive over today. Adv. LICENSE PLATE SERVICE Driver's & Chauffeur's Bonded 385-9803 rescue work took about half an hour, and Schaeffer was in the water for nearly an hour before he was bundled off to the hospital, wrapped in blankets. Mc- Henry County sheriff's deputies transported the man to Mc- Henry hospital. Mrs. Fisher-deserves praise for "her watchfulness, and according to witnesses, the Mc- Henry fire department including Chief EdJusten, Asst. Glenn Petersen and volunteers, Ray Rayberg, Gary Gough, and Ernest Schooley were heroic in their rescue mission. We are happy to report that Harold Schaeffer was released from the hospital the next day, in excellent condition. The Nelsons were fearful that the big canine would injure the smaller pet, but that came to an end as Hansie investigated the little mite and was met with a spit and a flash of sharp claws. He retreated to a corner and cowered for about an hour and a half. In the meantime, Elma and Don howled with glee. MILESTONES Belated congrats to Tommy Maenner who marked his tenth IMANCE TYPE AWARD TO EUGENE SCHAEFER Solicitations placed in the mail which resemble bills must bear a conspicuous warning that they are not invoices or statements of account as of April 6. Implementing an amendment to the Federal Revenue and Salary Act of 1967 aimed at deceptive solicitations, the regulations published in the Register require the following notice on each solicitation: "This is a solicitation for the order of goods and/or services and not a bill, invoice, or state- , merit of account due. You are under no obligation to make any payments on account of this offer unless you accept this offer." The regulations also require that the warning be printed in type no smaller than 12-point in size and that in no case shall it be less conspicuous than the boldest type used to print other words on the solicitations. The Department's General Counsel, Timothy J. May, expects the amendment to "dryup" a scheme which has defrauded thousands of mail patrons each year. One of the largest groups victimized by these solicitations are the businesses and other organizations listed in the classified sections, or Yellow Pages, of telephone directories. Mr. May said that "Milbirthday March 15. . . .Johnny Prather will have one candle on his cake, March 23. . .Sandy Betts turns a lovely 15 and birthday congrats to Ann Matthesius and to Mary Kantorski who will be 76, all on March 24. . . .Sylvia Fernandez will be 10 and natal day greetings to Alice Gustafson and Pete Kasper, March 25. . .Silver wedding anniversary to Margaret and Ed Stacknick, March 26. Best wishes to all. Much different than last year's record was the temperature at 60 degrees on Monday and spring hasn't sprung yet. Thank goodness, it arrives this week. See you next week? lions of solicitation which resemble IBM-type billing cards or ihvoices for legitimate directories are mailed to firms according to their classification in the Yellow Pages. Overworked or careless office workers are tricked into remitting the $60 or $85 fee thinking it represents a bill which must be paid." Mr. May added that while directories are published, they have little or no advertising value. Usually only one copy is sent to each advertiser. While the primary problem involves the fake business directory, the General Counsel. has ruled, in response to an inquiry, that magazine subscription solicitations which resemble bills mast also carry the prescribed warning. Mr. May saiid, "There is no reason to conclude that Congress intended less protection from deception in the case of (magazine) subscriptions than in other cases." Mr. May said" The Department will need the cooperation of businessmen and others if we are to effectively enforce the new regulations." Those receiving solicitations designed to resemble bills which do not have the warning are asked to forward them to the Mailability Division, Office of the General Counsel, Post Office Department, Washington, D.C. 20260. Mr. May said that if postal patrons are in doubt about the mailability of this type of solicitation, they may submit the proposed mailing piece for a ruling by his office. SOLICITATIONS IN MAIL MUST BEAR WARNING A performance type award was issued by the Post Office department this week to Eugene P.
