PG. 6, - PLAINDEALER - WED., MAR. 27, 1968 Gas Co. Division 1mm Wins Titl Proving beyond question its championship status, Northern Illinois Gas Company's northwest division basketball team won the company's annual inter-divisional tournament for the third consecutive year. Shown with Kenneth J. Stanton, division manager, holding the first place trophy, are (from left): Thomas E. ^Thompson of McHenry; H. Raymond Bailey, Algonquin; William J. Oeffling, McHenry; Lawrence L. Huey, Batavia; George T. Morrison, Elgin; Thomas Spasojevich, Crystal Lake; Robert D. Kellerman, Elgin; Donald J. Peacock, and Donald C. Niehengen both of Crystal Lake; James B. Pinkstaff, McHenry; and Charles T. Calvin of Harvard. So we took another trip outside of McHenry County -- all the way to the big city of Peoria. It's corn country down that way and some farmers were doing their spring plowing. Seemed to have had more rain than fell on McHenry County. We wheeled down Rt. 47 to "66" where you have to go like h-- or get run over. Cut across "24" to Peoria where we met a fellow picking up mail. Well, we had the finest visit while he misdirected us first, then had to call us back to put us on the right track. He was a real nice fellow, but in no hurry. Never w0uld have fit in the speed of tl^e Pony Express. fHad a real fine motel room with twice as much space as we fieeded -- and some little extras never found in the old days when you got a room for a dollar and a half. SO I HE By Earl Walsh They were all hopped up over their Peoria Central basketball team, but can now wait for next year. If Evanston isn't the best team in the state it is too late to prove it. The way they swept through the tournament, nobody can deny their greatness. Watched the state basketball toorney Friday night, went to sleep in our chair for a while, then awakened to see those whirling dirvishes of U.C.L.A. beat Houston with plenty to spare. The California team has a couple of guards who make lightning look sluggish. secretary of the 9 o* dockers for 45 years, since the league was started. "Red" Winkel is another old timer in the ranks. So is Nick B. Freund. Bill Althoff and "Pa'" Thenneswere unable to attend. Both were present last year. A1 Blake was chairman of the event and had the evening well planned. Oh-we had some fun! • Like in most motels we hpve found, the TV reception was lousy. There was more snow on that screen than we h&ve had on the ground all winter. We are printing the MCHS spring sports schedule this week and suggest you use it as a pin up after the family has read the paper. Watching Carolyn Justen place the lighted candles on tables in Mi Place the other night made us think she rates a place in history alongside of "The Old Lamplighter". ; When we finished our business and returned to the motel, check-out time rolled around so. we explained to the room clerks tllat our wife had gone shopping and hadn't returned. They seemed to understand the problem and gave us an extension of time. t Weaved around to take different roads on the way home, scenery in those parts this time of year is nothing to virite about. * -- -- - J Stopped for a cup of coffee ajjt a place where the woman id just baked some homeade cookies. That was kind cozy. Had a great time at the Forester Bowling dinner Saturday night at the American Legion home. We were guests of the "old" group that bowls every Friday night at the Palace. This was Ladies Night. There are many new faces in the group since we started attending those good time parties. And still a few of the old boys. George P. Freund has been 1968 MCHS Golf Team Shows Power As Practice Starts By Jan Harris For the past two weeks the MCHS Golf Team has been practicing in the Landmark gym. The bqys are hitting golf balls into a driving net which was given to Mr. Cuda by the late Julius Goffo. With the return of 4 lettermen, this years team, again, should be very strong. Letter winners from last years team are Frank Cuda, Mark Domato, Tim Martin and Robert Mauch. Bob Mauch and Frank Cuda have earned three major letters, Tim Martin two and Mark Domoto one in golf. With this balance and an outstanding group of sophomores and freshmen the future in golf looks good for Mr. Cuda. Outstanding sophomores are Harry Hans, Jeff Michels, Jim Michels, Kurt Knaack, and Jim Lightner. Outstanding freshmen are Nelson Adams, Randy Smith, Tom Funk, Dan Nosal, Steve Fain, Steve Cuda and John Thomas. A total of 37 boys signed up for the. team. This will be cut to 20 in two weeks and a freshmen - sophomore, and varsity schedule will be played. All home matches will be played at the McHenry Country club starting at 4:15. Thefirst match will be at Antioch on April 11, followed by Libertyville oh April 18. MCHENRY RECREATION TEN PIN QUEENS-MONDAY NIGHTS Doretta Otto 170-180-162- By Bert Hagemann With opening day just a couple of weeks away, now is the time for another stab at predicting the North Suburban baseball race. The football picks came out quite close, and in basketball I managed to pick one correctly, the winner, North Chicago. As I see it, the final standings come the 23rd of May could very well look like this: 1. Barrington 2. Dundee 3. North Chicago 4. Libertyville 5. McHenry 6. Zion-Bettton 7. Crystal Lake , 8. Woodstock. The Broncos are loaded this season where it counts, right up the middle. They have invincible Vince Tdlpo and crafty John English back on the slab with heady Brian Clay behind the plate. Couple this with fair hitting and they should have the depth to make things miserable for the rest of the conference. Dundee has MacKenzie, one of the best lefties in the state as , pitcher, along with Peel behind the plate. Their lack of pitching punch might hurt on double header days, but coach Howard Schneider will get the most out of them to be sure. North Chicago will once again feature a terrific attack, but I feel their pitching will not hold up well enough over the season. How-" ever, they are always a threat and could surprise if Guy Curtright can find a stopper. Libertyville and Zion will be strong hitting teams as usual, but their pitchers were all seniors last year and help will have to be found there. Crystal Lake and Woodstock are probably a year away, as both are rebuilding and both will miss the likes of talented hurlers like Glen Guss and Bob Johnson. This brings us to the Warriors. As I stated earlier, this will be a young team with fine potential, but not yet really tested in the rugged baseball wars of the North Suburban. Although we have yet to play an intrasquad game, we have managed to get outside three times, and here are some names to watch.
