Muriel Gilmore, Publicity chairman WORK FORCE OF SEVERAL HUNDRED IN CANCER FIGHT £} A work force of several hundred >persons in McHenry county is carrying out an intensive two -pronged program this month. Their mi ssion is straight forward: Help whip cancer. Their method: The 1958 Cancer Crusade. These 509 volunteers are undertaking this mission as an informational effort and as a fund - raising campaign. Chairman of the Cancer Crusade for the second year is Arnold N. May, Richmond. May is also chairman of the county unit board of directors. "This program is inspiring because workers give every family a brochure on wjystospot and whip cancer. Then they invite the persons they visit to contribute to the Crusade." May explained "County goal this year is to raise $20,000 - $4,000 more than the last year's total." "The informational job is equally as important as the fund-raising. "Cancer is a disease that Wed., Apr., 10, 1968 - Plaindealer - Sec. 2, Pg. 5 more than any other requires each citizen to be responsible and alert concerning his own well-being." May explained lives can be saved if people will act when any o* the seven danger signals of cancer appear. Science is making important strides in its fight against cancer. Specific information concerning the relationship between cigarette smo'ting and cancer has generated considerably more interest in combating the disease, May noted. The Surgeon General of the United States in his report declared smoking is injurious to health. The McHenry County Cancer Crusade is correlated with the work of the American Cancer society, tyloney is used for research, public education, professional education, and services such as providing detection, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation facilities. About one-third of the ACS funds goes into research to provide grants to key scientists, grants to institutions and epidemiological research studies. "One key in conquering cancer is for persons who suspect cancer or who have an undiagnosed illness to obtain medical help fast," May pointed ojU "The fact that so many people wait six to nine months after they have a cancer symptom makes it extremely difficult for medical science to help them."
