MAY 8. .1968 - PIAINDEAI PS - pG> 13 From The Farm Adviser's Desk FARROWING HOUSES The overall temperature for swine farrowing houses should be 50-55 degrees F. for pigs. There can also be supplemental heat from infra-red lamps or floor brooding systems. Relative humidity should be kept at 50-70 per cent to minimize condensation, corrosion and odor effects. Heaters and fans with timers and thermastits are usually required to ipeet these requirements. PLANT CORN EARLY Corn rarely germinates until soil temperatures reach 50 degree F. and germination occurs slowly until soil temperatures go above 55 degree F. Farmers can plant corn when the soil temperature at 1:00 p.m. reaches 55 degree F at the four-inch level. You can also plant when the soil temperature at 7:00 a.m. reaches 50 degree F. at the two-inch level. Early-planted corn seldom suffers damage from late spring frosts because the young corn plant's growing point remains underground until the plant is 12 to 14 inches tall. Leaves that "frost off" become the plant's lower leaves. Their loss results in little yield drop. PLAN HERBICIDE PROGRAM Farmers following crop rotations need to plan their herbicide program to reduce or eliminate residues as well as to control weeds. Atrazine, a chemical widely used on corn, may affect crops other than corn the year following application unless certain precautions are taken. Do not use atrazine where you plan to seed small grains, small seeded legumes, or vegetable crops this fall or next spring. Soybeans are less sensitive to atrazine than other crops. ^ j_s to use a low-residue herbicide such as Ramrod, Randox or 2, 4-D or else use no herbicide on the last year of corn before planting a sensitive crop. ' PASTURING COWS Don't pasture dairy cattle before the pasture has at least tour to eight inches of growth or you can harm the young plants. Remember, early pasture contains lots of water, highproducing cows can't get enough to meet their dry matter needs, •ft? or s'*a8e ancl grain with the pasture forage. The grain mixture should contain 12 percent total protein. PRE-EMERGENCE HERBICIDES ATRAZINE is the most popular herbicide for corn. It controls both broadleaved >veeds and grasses. It is best on light soils low in organic matter. RAMROD give good control of grass and some broadleaved weeds. It performs well on dark or light soils. Corn has good tolerance to Ramrod. You may need to follow Ramrod with a spray of 2, 4-D to remove broadleaved weeds in corn. RANDOX is primarily for darker soils and not sandy soils. It controls annual grasses and pigweed. You may need an early post-emergence application of 2, 4-D to remove broadleaved weeds. Randox is irritating to skin and eyes. 2, 4-D is one of the best broadleaved weed killers for corn. Use a post-emergence spray over the corn when the corn is two to six inches tall. Bay Windows Stock bay windows make it easy to change a house from drab to dramatic. They're available in assembled units of ponderosa pine. Most styles have flanking windows that open for ventilation, and some have window seats with storage underneath. •j 8'8"B"8'5 b b V5"<nrrg"a"r8"ra"flT5"a fl"fl"fl"fl a a b »ag 1 Oiffil Extra I S & H Stamps i o with every cosmetic I .
