Morrow, Modesta, Calif.: I remember when the Mississippi River was the west boundary of our farm near DeSoto, Wisconsin. There was a large camp of Indians by the river and every spring and fall the sky was dark with w i l d d u c k s and g e e s e migrating north and south. The Indians shot many of these birds and piled them in heaps till the feathers dropped off easily. The pioneer log one-room cabin was in good shape, with a large fireplace and a great iron kettle. When a fat hog died it was cooked in the kettle and ashes added to make liquid soap for wash day and the old hand scrubboard. Baths were taken in a wood tub with rain or snow water and in w i n t e r we waded through snow to the fresh air toilet with frosty seats. Winter mornings the water in the kettle on the kitchen stove would be frozen solid. M SUMMn 1 SERMON by Barb Baker Poultry and Egg National Board . BARB ^ BAKER SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC The bright sun promises a wonderful day for a picnic. What should we pack? Sandwiches, cake, fruit and oh--yes, let's have hard-cooked eggs. Better yet, let's have pickled eggs. After all, this is the time of the Springtime Egg Festival. The colorful eggs and beets will add zest to the menu. Along with this serve cucumbers and sour cream. What a marvelous menu for a fine day. Pickled Eggs 'N Beets 1 jar (1 lb.) pickled beets 6 hard-cooked eggs, shelled YOU'RE LUCKY Think how lucky you are. You may not be able to forget your troubles, or cause them to disappear, but you can turn your thoughts away from them. Think how lucky you are to have a roof over your head, bread on the table, relatives and friends to share a moment or two with; think about all of the things so often taken for granted. Think how lucky you are that life is not completely perfect. Would you look toward tomorrow if you knew that it would be a day no different than today in so much as a single aspect. How monotonous if one rose at exactly the same hour each morn, ate the same meal as the day before, walked the same paths, spoke the Same words, met the same people only, and saw nothing new to the eye. Spring is doubly welcome because it heralds the end of winter. Yet few men fail to see the beauty of an autumn afternoon, perhaps even look forward to the first snowflake of winter. Life is a living experience. Live it, every day. Don't ask God to make it more perfect than it already is. Make yourself realize how wonderful the world can be for all those who would share in all it has to offer.
