This is a significant cause of injury among boaters, according to the Department of Conservation. To help prevent these tragedies, officials recommend that all compartments should be closed when fueling and the fuel hose nozzle should be grounded to a metal section of the intake line to prevent static electricity sparks. The compartments should be thoroughly ventilated after fueling. Fuel lines and bilges should be kept clean and every boat should carry extra fuel in proper containers.
