PG. 6/ - PLAINDEALER- WED.f SEPT., 11, 1968 By Bert Hagemann Coach Don Seaton and his cross country men opened up official workouts two weeks ago, and after a chat with Don, tills reporter becomes very much convinced that this will be the year for the trophies to pile up in the McHenry case. This years Warrior edition has tremendous potential, and more important, depth. It still is basically a young squad* with two seniors, Dennis Roby and Mark Smith, heading up the list of returning lettermen. Both runners are in their fourth year of competition, and coach Seaton is expecting great things from both of them. However, the real strength of the squad lies pi-bably in a fine junior group of runners. Headed Hunters May Purchase Licenses, Bui Not Hunt Without Firearm Card Springfield, 111., Sept. 5 » Illinois sportsmen may purchase a hunting license, deer permit or Migratory Waterfowl Stamp without having a Firearm Owners Identification Card in their possession, according to the Illinois Department of Conservation. However, possession of the ID card is necessary while hunting with firearms. Conservation officials believe the reason that many sportsmen have not purchased their hunting licenses is thatthey have assumed they must have the identification card before being issued a license. The Firearm Owners Identification Card is necessary for persons who own and possess firearms and to purchase sporting arms or ammunition. The Firearm Identification Program Is administered by the Depart- Soap Bowl Report- On Freshmen Football On Friday, Sept. 5, the freshmen football team played the first game of the so-called Soap Bowl. One team was coached by Scott Partenheimer and the other was run by Rutkowsld. This short run of a game with no holds barred showed that the whole of the freshmen squad does show some promise for the years to come. As an observer at most of their practices and the time the coaches put Into making a team, it seems that when these hoys go into a scheduled season they should have some support, There are quite a few boys who show a great deal of promise and the squad on the whole shows they really love the game. For a gang of beginners they really came up with a few thrills by both teams scoring a touchdown. These boys deserve some support on their Saturday games. The quality on this whole varsity squad is excellent, and when one considers the fact that this years juniors were 15-3 in last year and won the county sophomore meet, you have to come up with an enthusiastic appraisal. By the time this edition hits the street, the Warriors will already have run in their first meet against Grant, and will host Crystal Lake on the new McHenry course on Thursday, September 12. All this reporter can do is urge you to try and get out to follow a squad which if they work hard and train hard will quite conceivably bring home some championship bacon this year. That disturbs some, but wouldn't be so bad if they left their marking materials home. The time has come when baseball teams bring up minor league stars to give them a whirl in the big time.
