Cooking Tips Outdoor cookery equipment was meant to be used in the great out-of-doors -- not in a garage, on the back porch, or in some closed space. O.L. Hogsett, University of Illinois Extension safety specialists, says families are flirting with danger if they use a charcoal burner in a closed area. This advice concerns a small habachi as well as a fuihsized patio grill. / Carbon monoxide given? off by the smoldering char coal provides the danger. Wherethere's little ventilation, people can be overcome by the fumes before they realize what's happening. Charcoal grills are meant to be used only outdoors or folks. Everyone must still be trying to get into the old routine of getting the kids off to schqpl after the lazy summer months. If you have any items of interest, please call prior to noon on Mondays. where adequate indoor ventila-/ tion is simplied. For instance, barbeque grills built into today's homes are engineered for sufficient ventilation to eliminate danger from fumes. | Because there is little flaming from charcoal briquettes] many people believe there is no danger in bringing them into the house. Hogsett emphasizes that carbon monoxide is especially dangerous because it cannot be seen or smelled. It's an invisible, odorless colorless and tasteless gas that can overcome a person without a bit of warning. Campers, in particular, find charcoal a handy cooking fuel. But some have foolishly tried to use charcoal inside cars and tents for heat. Hogsett reports that several deaths have resulted from such usage. Keep the charcoal cooking where it belongs. And that's out in the open where there's plenty of fresh air to carry those deadly fumes away. *• g * 1 i CAR WASH CENTER THE.
