According to the American Gas Association, many hamemakers are as concerned with keeping a wide variety of permanent press clothing in shape as they are with weight watching. For several years permanent press garments represented a homemaking paradox. They offered convenience and saved time and energy but they could also be a problem if they werenot handled properly. Today, however, new and more effective permanent press material has all but eliminated the need for touching up creases and pleats. These new materials, and newly designed gas - fired clothes dryers have just about put an end to impermanent permanent press clothes, says A.G.A. Available in today's gas dryers are cycles which keep the temperatures within heat ranges determined by permanent press manufacturers. Some have warning devices which indicate that permanent press clothes should be removed from the dryer while ©lhars have tumble-action ccol down periods to prevent wrinkle*.from.. setting in as clothes lie in the bottom of the dryer. The Gas Association notes that permanent press clothes have done much to reduce the cost of clothing for the average family. The Association adds that use of a gas dryer to insure proper laundry techniques can further cut family clothing bills. It's all the hot water you want when you want it, says the American Gas Association. Getting the right amount of hot water at the right temperature is simple, thanks to the wide variety of water heaters on the market today. To select one suitable for your family's needs you should know the peak demand periods in your home and best temperatures for various uses. Automatic dishwashers and washing machines, for example require very hot water - up to 160 degrees - for really efficient operation. Armed with this information, you can select a water heater that will let you increase or decrease the temperature of the water quickly, and conveniently and has the tank capacity and recovery rate sufficient to meet your peak demands. The recovery rate is the term used to describe the rate at which a water heater will deliver hot water if the tap were left fully open for extended periods of time. Here are some typical hot water uses to help you estimate your total hot water requirements for a given period: a tub bath consumes 15 gallons ofhot water, a shower takes three gallons per minutes, automatic dishwashers use 10 gallons and automatic washing machines between 18 and 25 gallons per load. Thus, three showers, each of five minutes duration, total 45 gallons of water needed in a 15- minute period. Twenty gallons would be from the water heater. If three successive laundry loads are frequent in your home and your washing machine uses 20 gallons of hot water per load and each wash cycle takes approximately 40 minutes, you need 60 gallons of hot water in tow hours time. During this period, don't forget to add on the normal, routine demands for additional hot water. With a general idea of your hot water requirements, you can translate this information into tank capacities and recovery rate. The size of the tank indicates the amount of hot water on hand at the initial draw. BTU rating indicates the recoverability of the burner. If you select a high recovery gas heater with a high BTU rating, you can use a smaller tank. For example, a 30-gallon gas heater with 35,000 BTU input will deliver as much hot water per hour as 40-gallon gas heater with a 30,000 BTU rating. Both will supply 81 gallons of hot water in two hours, enough for three consecutive loads of laundry in a 25- gallon capacity washing machine, and still leave six gallons for other household needs. By comparison, both gas heaters will provide twice as much hot water in the twohour period as an 80 gallon tank using electricity. Thus, economical, dependable gas heaters give you all the hot water you want when you want it. Economy Plus Performance Gas - fueled automatic water heaters cost less to buy, less to install and less to operate than other types of water heaters, the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association says. Further more, gas units replenish the siqsply of hot water faster than other water heaters, GAMA maintains. The trade group adds that these four reasons explain why, in areas served by gas utilities, 90 percent of new home buyers install gas water heating equipment. ONE MAN'S . . .
