Ice and road grime wear them out fast. Keep the washer reservoir full and protected with the proper anti-freeze solvents. Body: Wash the car frequently, making sure the underside and body and chrome strip seams get a thorough rinse to eliminate salt and other corrosion- producing films. Wax the car, too. Batt&ry: If it is more than two years old, be wary; the third winter may be just too mich for it. Check the battery fluid level every time you get gasoline, and have its power output checked at the first sign of slow starting. Exhaust system: Have it checked carefully for possible damage at each chassis lubrication. Carbon monoxide deaths in autos are much more frequent during the winter. Keep a couple of windows open a bit when you drive the car. - , • • \ NOV. 22,1968 -PUMNDEALER-SEC.2, PGM L.L. Smith (left) shown with co-author DJ. Zukausky. CO-AUTHORS ARTICLE L.L. Smith, 311 N. AUTO MAINTENANCE The severe winter weather that will grip the Midwest this season can be just as rough on the family car as it is on humans. "Just as we tend to take better care of ourselves in foul weather, we should make extra effort to protect our autos from the ravages of winter," said Frank Colomer, manager of the Goodyear Service Store at McHenry Market place. Hie following preventive maintenance program is suggested until the cold weather gives way to spring: Engine: Change the oil every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. Cold weather is particularly hard on the engine, especially when local driving doesn't permit the engine to warm up. Suspension: Lubricate when you have the oil changed, or follow the recommendations of your owner's manual for winter driving. Slush and water can wash away or contaminate lubricants. Tires: Check the inflation pressure weekly. For every nine - degree increase or decrease in temperature, the inflation pressure will increase or decrease by one pound. Keep the tires at recommended inflation pressure at all times for maximum faction. t,, v , Gasoline tank: Use a gasoline TROOP 162 A pleasant surprise occurred at the last troup meeting. Ted Katte came to the meeting and offered his services as an adult leader. A former'Scout himself, Mr. Katte is interested in working with boys. The troop extends a warm welcome to Mr. Katte and thanks him for volunteering his help. If there are any other men in town who do not have boys in a Scout troop, but would like to become involved with scouting, please call Don Wolf. All adult' leaders that can be obtained, the better and more varied program can be offered to the boys. Ladt, night the Scout Court of Honor was held. Next week we will list the awards won by the boys. We wish to congratulate David Walter on becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest award a boy can earn.
