Mr. Frystak has served as vice-president and director of the council for the last five years and was chairman of the original Study committee in 1964, which was created to study feasibility and advisability of creating the Metropolitan Cirtisade of Mercy. ' The Suburban Community Chest council is a Service organization with 108 member Chests and funds representing 175 communities in an eight county area surrounding Chicago. SHOP IN McHENRY THE LAW SERVES YOU A tiny glass sphere has become as elemental to safe driving on today's highways as the wheel is to the movement of' your car. You see, literally billions of spheres -- all made put of glass -•• are present throughout our road: systems. These spheres constitute the tiny "reflectors" in pavement striping paints, reflectorized highway signs, and reflective license plates used in 33 states and the District of Columbia. The microscopic beads (about 10 million to the square foot) shine brightly because they -"bounce" headlight bieams directly back to your eyes instead of diffusing them all qver the landscape. Scientists call this characteristic "retro-reflectivity," ' One of the most striking uses of retro-reflective glass beads is as a reflective element in paveihent marking materials. Eteing able to see a centerline on a highway at night -- especially if it's raining -- can be a life-saver. And the increasing . use of reflective marking materials to line the edges of roads provides the night driver with more highlyvisible guidelines. .Highway striping is done with several materials, among them paint, powder and tape. Various paints have a drying time of from a very few seconds up to a half hour. A newer material, powder, dries instantly. Heat is used to make it adhere to either asphalt or concrete. Tape is used for both permanent and temporary road markings. Washington National Airport authorities use tape to mark virtually all of the airport's 62 miles of roadways. Used with an inexpensive primer, officials, there, have found it outlasts any type of paint they have ever used. Without primer, tape is used extensively for markings to delineate temporary detours around construction sites. There are other Ways to delineate roadways. In most cases, these methods are a supplement to regular pavement markings. One of thetti 'is by the use of reflective delineators which are "glue#*, at intervals, on cen-. terline stripes, or lyhere the stripes would normally be. These can also help solve the problem of the wrong-way driver on expressways; They c$i» be made so delves heading In the wrong direction see red reflection, instead of the normal white or yellow.: There is also the shouldermounted delineator -- usually a small reflector button or piece of reflective material mounted two or three feet off the ground. This type of delineation is quite common on curves and along other highway danger spots. Pavement marking has come far since the Romans reportedly originated the idea in their heyday. Today, highway officials and traffic engineers are doing everything possible to make night driving as safe and easy as it can be. But remember, it's really up to the man behind the wheel.
