What may seem good and proper to us may in reality be extremely harmful if not done in moderation and with good judgment. Such is the case with 93 million adult citizens who drink. The per capita consumption of alcoholic beverages is approximately 24 gallons a year. This is not a small problem in our society. ' DO YOU KNOW: * In approximately half of the traffic accident deaths the victims had evidence of alcohol in the blood. * Alcohol first affects judgment, i^ibition and memory; then follows loss of coordination with slurred speech, hearing and visual difficulties; then stumbling, falling and eventually coma and occasionally death. * Two cocktails (about 0.04% of alcohol in the blood) may reduce visual acuity as much as wearing dark glasses at night. * Alcohol is Not a stimulant and is classified medically as a depressant. * A one shot (100 proof distilled spirits) is approximately equal to one 12 oz. can of four per cent beer. * The critical level, .10 per cent alcohol concentration in the average 150 lb. person, can be reached between four to six oz. of 100 proof whiskey or four to six twelve oz. of beer consumed in a one hour period. * The body gradually "burns" the alcohol at the rate of approximately one oz. of 100 proof whiskey per one and one-half hours. * No two persons' bodies react the same way to alcohol. Age, level of maturity, physical condition, kind of person you are, past drinking experience, temperature, weight and other factors have an effect. * Only time can eliminate alcohol from the blood stream. Coffee, cold showers or exercise does not speed up the sobering process. * Our youth tend to consider alcohol- as a symbol of adulthood. Habits of parents influence children on their attitude toward alcohol. * You do not have to be obviously intoxicated to be "under the influence" and an UNSAFE DRIVER. The above facts are courtesy of the National Safety Council. "FALL" PRECAUTIONS Keep halls and stairs free of boxes, toys and gifts - now that Christmas is over. Nasty falls can result from discarded material in a hall or stairway. TAX HELP A farmer whose operation grosses $40,000 or more ayear is in the "bigbusiness" fargiing category-. He should be willing to pay for efficient tax help. A tax practitioner not only should fill out tax forms, but should keep the farmer informed of new tax laws and rulings and other ideas for tax planning and savings. s u L T S DIAL 385-0170 170 385-0170 385-0i70 385-0170 385-0170 ASK FOR a CLASSIFIED AD TAKER McHENRY PLAINDEALER McHENRY. n >
