FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dee. 27, 1928) - The McHenry Pleasure club celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary at the club rooms on Green street Thursday evening of last week, their being about thirty-'five present to enjoy a roast turkey lunch. The McHenry Pleasure clubwas organized in the winter of 1902, but the equipment was not completed and the club going good until 1903. At the present time there are but three of the charter members still residing in McHenry, being Jacob Justen,F.G. Schreiner and Dr. D. G. Wells. Earl Walsh returned home Christmas Eve, after spending a few weeks in Chicago. f" Dr. and Mrs. A!, I. Froehlich and daughter, Adele, left Friday evening for Winnebago, Minn., where-they spent Christmas with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Froehlich, and attended their golden wedding anniversary also. The Knox Motor Sales have disposed of their interest in the garage including the sale of Ford products, Atwater Kent and farm machinery to Messers. Edward J. Buss and Lester J. Page. Mr. Buss and Mr. Page have been in the employ of the Knox Motor Sales for several years. The local troop of Boy Scouts held a short meeting Monday evening at which timeohe contest which had" been in progress for the past few months wasconcluded. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec.. 18, 1958) The McHenry Rotary club has again installed a ski lift at the McHenry Country club and members urge both children and grownups to enjoy the fun of a toboggan ride. / - McHenry again was listed third in sales tax collection. Named as grand jurors for the January term of court by the county board of supervisors are Alex Adams and C. Irene Guffey of McHenry. There will be ' a candlelight Christmas Eve service in the home of Ralph Mueller in Pistakee Highlands, planned by the steering committee for the purpose of forming a. Methodist church in the Highlands. ^ William Klapperich left recently for Miami, Fla., where he plans to spend the winter with his daughter, Mrs. George Mix, and fam||y. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pieroni are the parents of a daughter born Dec. 13 at Memorial hospital. Marilyn Jane Benson of Barrington became the bride of Thomas Adams in a fall wedding which was solemnized at St. Anne's church, Barrington. McHenry friends were pleasantly surprised Dec. 16 when the toy model of the "jeep-opiane" presented by Henry Cieslak of McHenry to Arthur Godfrey was shown on the latter's T.V. program. Mrs. Edith McAridrews, for many years a McHenry resident, observed her ninety-fifth birthday Dec. 14. Thgje are only two other G.R,.I.'s in McHenry county. Mrs. Hill was one of the ninety-nine graduates making up the third graduating class of the institute. The certificate will be presented on Oct. 9, 1969, at the state convention of the Illinois Association of Real Estate Boards at a special awards luncheon. The annual Real Estate Institute is a; work and study seminar for those actively engaged in the real estate profession and this -year was attended by over 800 brokers and salesmen-from all over Illinois. Classes were held daily from 8:30 to-5 p.rn. and several evenings, \yith lectures on all phases of the real estate business given, by outstanding speakers from all over the country. The three-year course covers aspects of law, appraising, financing, trading, investments, management, shopping centers, franchising, ethics, exchanging and many more. At the end of the w^ek of study the students are givSTi a three-hour final exam on Saturday morning on the materials they have covered in class. The Department of Education and Registration 6f the state of Illinois has accredited the 30 hours of Real Estate Institute Instruction for each course. CONGRESSMAN . ASKS HELP FOR BIAFRAN RELIEF Congressman Robert Mc- Clory (Rep-Lake Bluff) urged 12th district residents to join in emergency efforts to aid th§ Biafran people through contributions of food, clothing, medical supplies, and money. The Congressman stated that a Biafran relief vessel, chartered and paid for by the Dutch people, arrived in NeW York i,^City on Jan. 4. "To meet the | urgent needs of the Biafrans, this ship must be loaded with food and supplies and enroute by Jan. 11," said McClory. Noting that the English and Canadian people have already responded with their aid, McClory asked that "all Americans - and particularly residents. of the 12th district - join wholeheartedly , in^ this humanitarian effort. This is the type of direct people-to-people assistance which is in the finest tradition of international cooperation. I am also pleased to note that the United States government has recently indicated that it will make available eight cargo planes to assist in flying food and supplies to the people of Biafra." Congressman McClory concluded by congratulating his colleague, Senator Charles E. Goodell (Rep-New York), on his work in bringing the Biafran relief ship to America and in seeking congressional support for aiding the Biatran people.
