RkGE U-MAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1972 Career Day At High Schools Miss Janet Stemmer, representing an Indianapolis, Ind., school of beauty culture, talks before an interested group of students on Career day at MCHS. Many occupations were included in the program designed to allow young people of high school age an opportunity to learn more about careers in which they have expressed a preference. PLAINDEALER PHOTO 7 McHenry high schools transferred their schedule from academics to occupations as the MCHS staff turned their classrooms over to representatives of thirty-eight career areas one day recently. It was the school's first all-day career program planned to bring students in contact with people directly involved with occupational areas. The direct aim of Career Day is to provide an opportunity for students to be exposed to a variety of career areas so that they can realistically evaluate their interests and strengths as they plan for the future. Comments from the student body, such as "Career Day made me think about what I want to be...", "I learned what r e q u i r e m e n t s a n d qualifications are needed for different fields...", "It changed some of my ideas on what a career is...", indicate the representatives did an out standing job of meeting this goal In planning Career Day, the greatest need was for resource people to represent the career areas. The response from the community was most im pressive. Sixty speakers volunteered to share their training and experience with the students. Many have also offered to be continuing resource people so that students have a contact in the community who can help them actually see the operational aspects of an occupation. Some segments are much better than others. Re cently, for example, the show featured films of the private life of FDR. The good segments are well worth the time invested in viewing. The less good por tions pay dividends if one uses the time for a cat nap. IF BYGONE DAYS are indeed the good old days, then those golden days of yore may be visited daily. One need only tune in to his local TV station during the time slot taken from net works by the late FCC ruling. Reruns and oldies are seen in such profusion that one either basks in by gone days or becomes quite confused, thinking the mid dle of summertime TV is here while frost is yet on the pumpkin.
