^ - Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 11, 1932) Local Boy Scouts are joining in a nation wide celebration this week in observance of the twenty-second anniversary of the founding of the organization, the Boy Scouts of America. Many activities have been suggested for the week of Feb. 7 to 13. One of these suggestions which the McHenry troop is carrying out is the wearing of scout uniforms during the week. Boy Scout week is also an ideal time for rallies, demonstrations and exhibits and this was also put on by the McHenry troop at their meeting Monday night at the high school gym. The local troop is composed of about thirty scouts and ranks as one of the three best troops in the county. It has more Eagle Scouts than any of the other troops with three members who have attained this highest rank in scouting, being ML. Schoenholtz, Tony Wirtz and Harold Vycital, and the troop also contains several Star and Life Scouts. A pre-lenten wedding took place at St. Mary's church Tuesday morning when Miss Rosina Kloeckner became the bride of Mr. Henry Wohlert of Woodstock. They were at tended by William Wolf and Alice Hergott both friends of the bridal couple. Relatives and friends were saddened and shocked when they heard of the sudden death of Mrs. John F. Knox resulting from an automobile accident while she was motoring in Wisconsin on Feb. 4. Walter Brefeld graduated from the Coyne Electrical school, Chicago, following a 3M> month course. He had an average of 86Vfe. The young man is continuing for two weeks more devoting one to refrigeration and another to radio. Kenneth Cristy of Ringwood was elected vice-president of the County Farm Bureau at the annual meeting and election of officers in the Miller Theatre, Woodstock. William Whiting of McHenry was elected as a board member for the coming years. Walter C. Baird, mer chandise manager, H.G. Mc- Vey advertising represen tatives and E.H. Satorius district manager, officials of the Wear-U-Well Shoe Co., spent Thursday and Friday with B. Popp and family. Mr. Popp is the local Wear-U-Well merchant. The company of ficials assisted Mr. Popp in making general price reduction affecting thousands of dollars worth of footwear. Mr. Popp enjoys the distinction of being one of the most successful Wear-U-Well dealers in the system. A party of relatives surprised Mrs. Tony Blake Saturday evening in honor of her bir thday anniversary. She was presented with a gift and a pleasant evening was spent playing cards. Miss Helen Kutchera of Crystal Lake and Mr. Fred Pepping were married Feb. 9 in St. Thomas church, Crystal Lake, the Rev. E.A. Mc- Cormick reading high Mass. John Stock, caretaker for the Allen summer home, "Shore Acre" and other cottages along the Fox River at Orchard Beach, was the victim of a mysterious accident Tuesday evening and his unconscious body was found about 11:45 p.m. He was found by Leo Stilling and taken to a doctor's office and then to the Wood stock hospital. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 13, 1947) George Bohr died at his home on Court street, Feb. 12, at the age of 80. General Marshall's very excellent book "Victory Report" concerning the win ning of World War II in Europe and the Pacific, is now on sale at $1 a copy. In addition to this very interesting report, there is also information regarding the contributions made by our own community in winning the war. The report sponsored locally by the V.F.W. contains a section in which there is a history of the post and auxiliary. One accident on the highway was reported in this vicinity causing injuries to a local resident. Mrs. Grace Kennelly was bruised on the chest and back. Dan Daniels who heads the Lake Shore club on Route 120 at Lily Lake announces the purchase of the new Vibrato Model Hammond Electric organ. Mr. Daniels will preside at the new console. Mike Budler,, former owner of Palace Recreation, and Donald Weingart, an employee of McGee's clothing store for many years, have taken over the Pepsi Cola and soft drink route formerly operated by A. Governile. The new part nership which will be known as B. and W. Distributors. Mrs. Herb Reihansperger was guest of honor at a shower held at the C.J. Reihansperger home. Hostesses were Mrs. Robert Newkirk and the Misses Ruth and Joan Reihansperger. James Ludford of McHenry has been initiated into the Oklahoma chapter of Phi Delta Theta men's social fraternity at Oklahoma A.&M. college in Stillwater, Okla. A little more than seven years ago a little brown puppy was thrown out of a car almost in front of the J. Jepson car in McHenry. The Jepson duaghters feeling sorry for the dog took him home and presented him to their lather for a pet. When neighbors learned how the family had acquired the animal they would remark "Wasn't he lucky," so the little puppy was soon to be called "Lucky" by everyone who knew him. This week "Lucky" left this earth for dog heaven, someone passing the Jepson home shot the dog. Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Adams have returned from a trip to Mexico and other points of interest in the southwest. Thirty Boy Scouts with their dads or sponsors were in at tendance at the Boy Scout banquet at Art and Lee's restaurant. Bill Green presented Jack Wirtz with a second class badge and Ray McGee presented a first class badge to Robert Christensen. A review of the standings in the recently completed McHenry County Women's team tournament shows five McHenry bowling teams placing in the money. The tournament was held at Fox River Grove. Announcement has been made of the approaching marriage of Miss LaVerne Powers of Chicago and Mr. George Tetzner of West Shore Beach, McCullom Lake. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 15, 1962) The Viscount color guard which captured second place trophy in preliminary com petition last Saturday will be host when the "On Guard" show is held Feb. 18 in the McHenry high school gym. Bad luck seems to be plaguing nine year old Gary Pribyl of McHenry. Last Thursday he broke his right arm when he slipped on the ice at the Edgebrook school playground. The same arm was broken last September when he fell from a merry-go-round while playing. The youngster was taken to the McHenry hospital for treatment. Thomas R. Dowe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Dowe of McHenry, completed recruit training at the naval training center, Great Lakes. Graduation ceremonies marking the end of the training included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries. <. Miss Jacqueline Skidmore of' Ringwood was a lovely bride on Saturday, Feb. 3, when she exchanged vows with Ronald Creutz of McCullom Lake in a nuptial ceremony which took place at Zion Lutheran church, McHenry. Mrs. Robert Thompson and Miss Maud Granger attended a meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution held at the home of Mrs. Fedou of Elgin where they saw Miss Virginia Peterson of the local high school receive her Good Citizenship award. Twenty-seven members of the Woman's club chartered a bus for Chicago where they visited the Art Institute and also had luncheon there. Five of the group had the unexpected pleasure of seeing movie actor Vincent Price who was also there. The party was planned by Mrs. Fred Lieberson. E.B. Schaeffer, builder of row boats, is moving his business from Minnesota to Lakemoor. He manufactures unsinkable steel row boats 16 ft. by 14 ft. and special duck boats. Mr. Schaeffer has been manufacturer of these boats for fifteen years. It will be 44 years wed for Emma and Otto Pyritz on Feb. 20. John A. Yegge, airman ap prentice, U.S.N., son of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert A. Yegge of McHenry, is serving with the Naval Air technical training unit, Jacksonville, Fla., which underwent an annual ad ministrative and material inspection recently, conducted by Rear Admiral Joseph C. Clifton and his staff. Kenneth C. Peterson, McHenry, has purchased Borg's Roan Duke 14th, a junior yearling bull. Eighty-three members of the Fox Valley division of the Illinois Police Association enjoyed a dinner meeting at the V.F.W. clubhouse Tuesday evening of this week. Among them were Chief of Police Joseph E. Grobel, Capt. "Dutch" Weyland of Belvidere, police captain in that city, Fred Meyer, superintendent of public works, Alderman Harry Conway, Arthur Linderman of Chicago, a former finger print expert for the Chicago police and a past president of the police association, Larry Hoffman of Oak Park secretary-treasurer of the organization and Mayor Donald P. Doherty who welcomed the visiting officers. Mrs. Marlin Kalpin, Rt. 5, McHenry, is a local member of Clipped Wings, stewardess alumnae association, which will meet for lunch on Thur sday, Feb. 15. Charles Urbach 102 Register , * From County High Schools With many important national and local elections within this calendar year, in cluding the Junior college bond referendum, a young voter registration drive was spon sored last week in three area high schools. The Woodstock-McHenry League of Women Voters, in cooperation with McHenry County Junior college, arranged for deputy registrars to be available in the schools during student lunch hours. Student and teacher par ticipation was enthusiastic and influenced greatly the success of the drive. Registration was as follows: McHenry high school, West campils, 63, Woodstock Community high school, 16; and Marian Central high school, 23. Many students living in the Woodstock area had previously registered at the court house, which accounts for the lower numbers in that area. and W.
