Along with other events of the past recalled on her birthday was the time 92 years ago when her father. John Salesbury. looked over the muddy acres of the village of Chicago and allowed the place was too marshy for him to live in The Salesbury family of seven drove on in their covered wagon to Crystal Lake. Mrs Beers lived in Crystal I^ake until her marriage to Dr E A Beers when they moved to McHenry Paul Gerasch, well known McHenry plumber, has opened a plumbing shop at his home on Pearl street Mr Gerasch has a master plumbers license, having successfully passed his examination at Waukegan and is fully capable of doing any kind of work alonK this line. A large crowd of sport fans attracted by the "free" sign at the high school, assembled to watch the splended program at the gym last Thursday night The faculty five taught the varisty how the game should be played and won from the high school lads 22-14 The married Men's Athletic club displayed considerable adeptness at handling a volley ball and pleased the crowd with their antics Little Miss Eleanor Pries of Waukegan arrived last Friday for a several days visit in the George Bohr home. The organist will be Walter Flandorf of Chicago. The Kimball organ which has been installed in the church is one of the finest in this part of the country Mr and Mrs. Joe Fries have moved from West of the tracks to the Vandenboon house on Waukegan street Earl Dowell is at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, where he has been seriously ill His many friends are hoping for a speedy recovery Leo Blake was the victim of a surprise party Sunday evening when a party of relatives and friends invaded his home on Main street in honor of his birthday anniversary Attendance pins were presented at the Methodist Sunday school session with Alice Nickels receiving a bar for four years of perfect at tendance at Sunday school Six months pins were received by Bobby and Arline Hendrichs, Glen and Bobby Peterson and Mrs Nickels Dr Cook, who is giving the Schick test, addressed the high school body Tuesday noon He commented on the orderliness and discipline of our high school Dr Cook has been in many of the schools of Illinois and the students enjoyed the 20 minute speech on his ex­ periences. Mr and Mrs James Camp­ bell are the parents of a son born Monday Mr Campbell is an employee at the local A and P store TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 13, 1947) Just as World War II was becoming a memory and a less vivid one with each pa^ine day, a list of men who lost their lives in McHenry county during the last conflict was released. This list is believed to be the most authentic compiled to date giving the serviceman's address and branch of service with which he fought. McHenry county lost almost 150 men during the war not including many who formerly made their home here or who had close contact because of families residing here. Plaindealer employees and a multitude of friends were shocked and saddened this Thursday morning March 13 to learn of the death of Charles F. Renich, 75 years old. He purchased the McHenry Plaindealer from Frank Schreiner on July 1, 1925 and had served as its owner and publisher since that time. A gay time was had Saturday night by the six members of the W.S.L.S. club at Nancy Rudin's home when the girls held their annual pajama party. The girls in attendance were Nancy Carey, Ercel Richardson, Eileen Smith, Agnes Miller, Elida Page and Kate Nye. Harry Schmidt of McHenry, who with his wife has been vacationing in N. Hollywood, Calif., visiting their daughter, Mrs. Margaret Buck, was feted at a birthday celebration on March 9 at the home of their granddaughter, Mrs. Marilan Thompson Veterans may now reinstate their war time (term) National Service Life insurance without a physical examination at any time before August 1, 1947. A very large crowd gathered in the high school auditorium Sunday evening March 9 to hear the annual band concert under the direction of Paul Yanda The program of con­ siderable length and in- technical qualities difficult, presented a challenge which the young musicians met ad­ mirably. Mr and Mrs. Carl Springman have purchased the business known as "Ma's Tavern" located on East River road and will conduct it under the name of "Snug Harbor Inn". The couple announce fine food and drinks as their specialty. New agent for Chevrolet motor sales in McHenry is M.F. Clark of Janesville, Wis., who on March 1, purchased the garage business of Mrs. Paul Schwerman and took over the Chevrolet agency. Mr. Clark was employed in the sales department of the Chevrolet motor division in Janesville for the past fifteen years and comes to McHenry with the highest qualifications for his new work. Mrs. Marie Corso was pleasantly surprised last Sunday at a dinner and family gathering at the Corso home, the occasion being her birthday celebration. Cards were played and a lunch served during the evening. Present at the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kinsala, the Misses Elinor and Mildred Kinsala and George and Bill Kinsala. Evening guests were Marie Powers, Rita Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Jensen. McHenry will be host to members of the Business and Professional Women of District 2., comprising McHenry, Will, DuPage and Kane counties at a special program March 23, in the high school auditorium. Guest speakers will be Mrs. Elizabeth Mann former commanding officer of the women's prison at Dwight, 111., and Sara McNamara former Army nurse who will speak on India. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 15, 1962) Myrt Martell, who purchased The Casual Shoppe from La Verne Antonson last Jan. 1, announces grand opening of the recently remodelled and enlarged store this weekend. Mrs. Martell who resides on River road has been a McHenry resident for more than ten years. The George Whiting family has moved from a farm in Nunda township to the former Raymond Howard place on Center street which they have purchased. McHenry heavy weight conference champion, Wayne Latimer, scored 84 points to become the high point man on the M.C.H.S. championship wrestling squad. Daniel D. Hawes has been named manager of production control and Roy G. Darnell has been selected as foreman of the new Modine Manufacturing Co. plant at McHenry. Mrs. Helen P. Bisbee, former operator of the Shangra-La home for the aged, died March 13 in St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, where she had been a patient for only eight days. Walter L. De Rouche of Pistakee Bay counts Tuesday, March 13, among his very lucky days. On that day he was ap­ proaching the Chicago and Northwestern railroad tracks on Main street driving west when he saw the commuter train only a few feet away. He realized he would be unable to stop in time because of slippery road conditions, so he stepped on the gas pedal and managed to get almost across before the train struck the rear two feet of the auto. Fortunately Mr. DeRoche escaped uninjured but nis car was damaged. The Community Methodist church was the setting for a pretty wedding March 10, when Miss Carol Gibson of Main street became the bride of Mr. Dennis Swedo of West Shore Beach. Rev. George Martin officiated at the 4 o'clock ceremony. Mrs. Susan Adams, 80, of Washington street, died early Thursday, March 8, at the Villa rest home where she had been confined for only one day. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hojnacki of McCullom Lake have only praise for the prompt and efficient action of company 1 firemen in extinguishing a fire in their home. More than 700 teachers and Scouts Plan 18th Annual Grant Pilgrimage Scouts planning on attending the sesquicentennial year, U.S. Grant Boy Scout Pilgrimage, April 28, 29 and 30, in Galena, 111., must get their Reservations in soon. Word from the Pilgrimage steering committee is that this year's registration is running two to one over last year's record 10,000 attendance. The theme for the eighteenth annual Scout Pilgrimage is the Covered wagon Era. The highlight of the event will be the celebration of the 150th bir­ th date of General Grant, 1822- 1972. Galena's historic Main street is expected to be decorated with bunting and shop windows will display pictures depicting the era. A stagecoach will head the hour and half parade. About 3,000 Scouts will be assigned camping spots at Recreation park in Galena and the balance is expected to camp at Apple River State park and the Palisades State park near Savanna. Special off-street parking areas have been designated to help ease the crowded down­ town area. Invitations have been mailed to President Nixon, Vice- President Agnew, Governor Ogilvie, Senator Percy, Senator Stevenson and Congressman Anderson. Box 4085, Rockford, Illinois 61110. 90CIAL CENTER DIRECTOR - Mrs. Marilynn Hamilton of 915 Oakwood drive, McHenry, has been named the social director for the Whispering Oaks Community center (shown above), located on Front Royal drive in Whispering Oaks. Plans are being made for many community activities such as card clubs, game rooms, pool, ping pong, craft classes and garden clubs, and many strictly social affairs. The center will be open from 10 to 5 daily until the organization work is complete. At that time, the hours will be 10 to 10 seven days a week. Reno Bertellotti, principal of the McHenry Junior high school, was elected president of that group. MCC Woodstock Campus Offers New Course Creative Expression is the title of a new course being offered at the Woodstock campus of McHenry County college. Classes will begin this Saturday, March 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. for ten weeks. The major portion of the course will be devoted to oral communication. group discussion, oral in­ terpretation, and im- provisational exercises. Subjects for discussion will include theater, film, music, poetry or any other media in which the student feels most interested. The aim of the course is to help the student effectively express his own ideas along with the creative efforts of others. One may register at the Woodstock campus at 113^ S.
