Owen cup competition occupying the calendar for the day. A wedding of interest to local people took place Wednesday morning at Resurrection church in Chicago when Miss Alice Bernacchi, daughter of Lieutenant and Mrs. Julian Bernacchi of Chicago, became the wife of Mr. Albert Barbian, McHenry businessman. Mrs. Phil Quinto and Miss Delia Beckwith were Chicago visitors on Tuesday. This was Miss Beckwith's first visit to Chicago and she greatly en­ joyed the many new and in­ teresting sights which she witnessed for the first time. Announcement is made in this issue of the Plaindealer of the opening of the Bridge Ball Room, McHenry, for the summer season with the Red Racketeers 8 piece orchestra furnishing the music on Saturday night, April 30. Roy DeBray, the orchestra leader, will make a parachute jump over the ball room at 4 o'clock p.m. from an altitude ofj3,000 feet. Watch for this stunt. Everett Hunter, Jr., president of the Everett Hunter Boat Co., is in charge of a large exhibition at the Boat Show at Navy pier. Some fine sport models and speed boats are being shown by the local boat maker. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ernst and son, George, of Chicago visited in the Dr. A.I. Froehlich home Sunday. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May l, 1947) Mrs. George Wirfs, age 68, died at the Woodstock hospital, April 27. She had been in poor health for about five months but had been confined to the hospital for less than a weeks. Good news came to local telephone users on Monday of this week when five of McHenry's 23 operators returned voluntarily to work. On Tuesday the remainder of the girls made their decision, also, to return to the switch board. Local service is now almost normal, although long distance service remains on an emergency basis. The annual V-E Day dance sponsored by Fox River Post No. 4600 Veterans of Foreign Wars will be held at the Bridge Ballroom May 8, Barbara Hoick's orchestra will furnish music for da icing. Dr. Paul Jus ten, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Justen of McHenry, last week opened his office on Waukegan road, Glenview, for the practice of dentistry. The family and friends of Miss Mary Grace Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Murphy of McHenry, are ex­ tremely proud since hearing that she will reign as queen of the spring prom at Mt. St. Clare college in Clinton, Iowa. Because of their excellence in scholarship during the past year, Earl and Lester Smith of this city have achieved the distinction of membership in a group of students to whom recognition will be given at the twenty-third annual Honor Day convocation to be held at the University of Illinois auditorium on May 2. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 3, 1962) An unfortunate accident, which occurred one mile south of 120 near Lakemoor, cost one man his life and resulted in serious injuries to another last Thursday evening. The dead man is Williard Christensen of Vernon drive, McHenry. The driver of the car, Miles Rowland, of Columbia drive, is in critical condition. Two of the hardest working orga nidations in McHenry these first days of spring are the Red Devils drum and bugle corps entering big competition for the first time this year, and the Viscounts Corps, national champions in their class in 1961. The community has long been proud of both of these groups and will be watching their progress with interest in the season ahead. Three fishermen in the Fox River narrowly escaped from drowning last Sunday after two hours of struggle to keep afloat and attract attention to their predicament. The men are Edward Clouse and Raymond Reed from Aurora and Rcwland Stinson of Oswego who were rescued by fishermen and nearby residents of the Sunny side area. Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Dean of Wonder Lake were guests of honor at a silver wedding an­ niversary celebration held last Saturday evening in Mathews hall. Their daughter, Donna Mae,arranged and planned the celebration. Mrs. Theodore Guy, 56, of McHenry Shores died in McHenry hospital, April 29, after an illness of several months. 4-H News BULL VALLEY DOERS The March 28 meeting of the Bull Valley Doers was held at Leader Reid Alderson's house. New officers for the coming year are as follows: President, Russell Schiller; vice-' president, Roxanne Schiller; secretary-treasurer, Jerry Larkin; federation delegate , Rhonda Schiller; recreation chairman, Jamie Huff and reporter, Ann Larkin. The topics discussed at the meeting were appointing new committees, forming a con­ stitution, handing out enrollment cards and health talks a Refreshments were served following the meeting.
