Kortemeter Res. 338-D975 Utf. 338-2000 From The Farm WHAT GOES INTO YOUR FOOD BILL? Current food prices have stirred concern about whether excess profits are being made in the food industry. It's difficult to point "the finger of guilt" at any one link in the food chain According to the USDA Economic Research*" Service (ERS), the American food bill for 1970 was $101 6 billion. The farmer only received $33.1 billion for his farm products. The marketing bill, which was mainly labor, was $68.5 billion. The ERS further breaks down marketing costs. In percentages they are: labor-47 percent, packaging~13 percent, transportation--7 percent, corporate profits after taxes--3 percent. Also included in the total marketing costs are: interest, repairs, etc. -- 3 percent; depreciation--3 per cent; rent-3 percent; ad vertising-^ percent; and other - -11 percent. On the average, Americans are not only eating more, but we eat better, than at any time in history. For example, in i960, Americans consumed 37 per cent d their beef as choice grade. By 1970, this figure had risen to 59 per cent. At the same time, consumption of utility, canner and cutter grade beef dropped from 18 to 13 percent, and consumption of standard and good grades of beef dropped from 13 to 8 percent and 28 to 16 percent, respectively . The percentage of prime beef consumed remained at 4 percent during the 10-year period. DESTROY VACCINE The Illinois Department of Agriculture is asking all swine producers to please check all refrigerators and freezers on their farms for hog cholera vaccine. If farmers have any vaccine they should contact Dr. John Johnson, county veterinarian, at 815-338-2040, or Louis Engelbrecht, Extension Adviser, at 815-338-3737, for proper disposal methods. OUTDOOR PESTS Spray the outside foundation of your house to keep ants, spiders, crickets and other outdoor pests where they belong-outdoors. Keeping the insects outdoors with a foun dation spray will also help to make your home safer. You won't need to use baits and sprays indoors where vour children can get at them. An average house requires three gallons df spray to do the job. Be sure to spray to the point of runoff all around the house. You will need pint of 45- percent, or 10 tablespoons of 72- percent chlordane concentrate in 3 gallons of water. . CHECK WATERWAYS Spring is an excellent time to check your waterways for damage and plan for con struction or seeding later in the year. Rig Hit Texas was struck by 2.068 tor nadoes from 1953 through 1971. while Rhode Island and the Dis trict of Columbia recorded none THIS WORLD!
