\ Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files erf May 5 1932) Mrs. Weir Keck, 36 years old, died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Anna Knox, on Friday afternoon, April 29, after three months of failing health. Many motorists are begin­ ning to drive through the country with the craning of the rice warm spring weather. One group of iarms outstanding for their neat appearance, fine buildings, good crops are those owned by the children of Joseph Justen of McHenry which adjoin each other on the Spring Grove road. Joseph Justen originally owned nearly 700 acres along this highway which have been divided among his children, Ben, Nick, Michael, Jacob and Christine, making each one a farm of good size. Roy DeBray, parachute jumper and dealer of the Red Racketeers eight piece or­ chestra, playing at the Bridge Ballroom is in reality Roy Matthews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Matthews of McHenry and is now making his home with his parents here. Mr. Matthews is local manager of the A and P store on Green street. Mrs. Clara Noonan and Miss Lillian Freund are proprietors of the Claire Beauty Shop. They invite you to pay them a visit at their spring opening. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 8, 1947) The James Lennon family has moved from Green street to the Claxton farm east of McHenry which they recently purchased. A new businessman has joined our community namely Frank Adler who is operating the former Riverside barber shop on Riverside Drive. The last jKPPrietor was George Waspr^who has engaged in farming since leaving business. Mr. Adler has changed the name to Frank's Barber shop. Among the forty-one out­ standing senior students named at last FYiday's annual Honor Day convocation held at the University of Illinois at Champaign was Miss Polly Kuby of West McHenry. At the city council meeting Monday evening, Mayor Overton announced that Earl Dwell, Chief of Police, had tendered his resignation ef­ fective Wednesday of this week. At the same time the Mayor appointed Lester Bacon, who has been serving as police officer, as the new chief. Dowell has accepted a position as greens keeper at a country club in LaFayette, Ind. McHenry friends of the Consell M. McDermott family of Chicago, former local residents, became anxious three weeks ago when they learned the McDermotts' son, Thomas, 15 years old, had disappeared from his home. Peter M. May, 80 years old, long a resident of the Spring Grwe community, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Eldred Johnson, in West McHenry, May 7. He had been ill only a week. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 10, 1962) A Pistakee Highlands couple returning home from a wedding in Lombard were killed early Sunday morning, May 6, in a tragic two car crash on U.S. highway 12. The accident claimed the lives of Albert F. Gilbert and his wife, Edna, both 71 years old. A Spring Grove pilot, Phillip A. Damians, 46, and his passenger, William Stevens, 38, of Wheeling, were injured late Sunday afternoon when their two passenger plane hit a high line wire as it approached the landing strip at Hebron airport. The Ladies Aid of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church will have a salad bar luncheon and fashion show in the social hall of the church May 16. It was announced this week by R.D. Swans on, Richmond Commercial manager of General Telephone Company of Illinois, that installation of the direct distance dialing equipment in Wonder Lake is progressing on schedule. Wonder Lake will be converted to the new dialing about June 17. Ed Hawhee and Bob Brad­ ford comedy team from McHenry were among several hundreds to take part in an ice carnival at Rainbow Arena last weekend. They were among the few selected for solo parts. Karen Bush of Johnsburg will play oboe with the fifty-seven piece concert band at Illinois State Normal university when that group presents its spring concert May 15. Brothers Meet Briefly Enroute Home, Overseas (Editor's note -- After this story was written, James Doran was flown back to Vietnam to meet lis ship, the Constellation, due to the recent upsurge in fighting James W. Doran, a warrant rfficer in the U.S. Navy, has just returned from his fourth tour of duty in the far east, this time aboard the U.S.S. Con­ stellation. His younger brother, 21-year-old Sgt. Terra nee P. Doran, of the U.S. Air Force is just going over for his second tour which will be in Thailand. Terry knew that his plane was leaving for overseas within hours of his brother's arrival and decided to do something about it. When Jim was coming through Customs at Travis Air Force base in California, he was suddenly given a message to come to the front of the customs line because his brother wanted to see him before departure. The two boys spent the next fifteen minutes exchanging news items and experiences. This meeting was Terry's first chance to salute his newly promoted brother, and in so doing, forced Jim to drop his luggage in order to return the salute. Terry will be assigned toa squadron cf OV-IO planes in Thailand, as a crew chief, while Jim will be stationed at San JAMES W. DORAN TERRANCE P. DORAN Diego for a time.
