Don't make the mistake, therefore, of thinking that your cosmetics and perfect "measurements" will hold a boy's undying devotion They are merely your anatomical "wrapping paper." Illinois ASPHALT-PAVING ill fade, grow wrinkled sprout grav hair charm never shows those signs of anatomical erosion A charming personality remains popular both at 18, 38. f>8 or even 98 You are entitled to get all the legitimate attention out of your anatomical wrapping paper But don't stop at that point "Catching attention" is only the first step in the sale, and winning popularity, plus a wedding ring, isstricltly a sales situation ' After catching attention, you must then "hold attention", produce action and ultimate satisfaction or your customer grows soured on the mer chandise and wants a refund Applied to marriage, that meaas a divorce' Alas, our movie magazines and TV shows now stress chiefly the "wrapping paper", thus deluding millions of girls So these impressionable teen agers think that a miniskirt, plus a cigarette and a heavy make-up job, are a sure road to happy marriage. At the age of 18, your cosmetic allure, plus your "measurements" and at tractive teeth may rate you above the 38 year old woman. Observations indicate that men who regularly drive make the poorest, most nervous riders in a car Be that as it may. just about any red-blooded American male driver would characterize a "back-seat driver" as a woman -- usually a relative - who, tense with appreheasion, is firmly convinced that without her steady stream of perceptive observations and timely warnings the driver surely would have had a i ac cident And guess what, men -- traffic safety experts say that in some cases she just might be right! But in 20 more years you'll then be 38, with plenty of other 18-year-olds to outbid you, if you rely solely on anatomical factors So learn how to be charming, for a teen-age coed can't equal the older woman who keeps a man feeling more important v hile on a date with her! A good back-seat driver can be especially valuable at night. Too many roads, especially in rural areas, still are not marked with modern reflective signs that pop out of the darkness, so the driver might not see vital traffic signs until too late. A sleepy driver also might be kept awake by a jabbering back-seat driver, or, better yet, might be told to stop and rest. But science isn't completely willing to endorse the idea of a back-seat driver for every car. Rather, it prefers to reserve judgment until certain questions are answered. For example, how much more tense does the prattling back-seat driver make the man behind the wheel, and how much more dangerous does a tense driver become9 Or does a back-seat driver suddenly startle the man 3 •v tmi old Time* From: Harry Tordoff, Cranston. R.I.: What folks today would call the "primitive-' way. was how my Dad earned a mighty good living for his family. He was in what is now called the "construction business." There were no trucks with his hands on the wheel and make him take actions with his car that confuse other drivers on the highway? So, at this point, science is neither for nor against the back-seat driver, and it's still up to each man to decide for himself if he should allow the back-seater to remain in his car. V or bulldozers then. He dug cellars with a pair of horses hitched to a flat-bottomed scoop After the hole for the cellar was dug. he would take a shovel and "hand trim" all bottom edges and the four corners. That way. he'd have the makings of a build ing's basement. He'd then bring load of broken stone which had been blasted from a huge ledge on our farm in a "tip cart." These would be hand-fitted into what would eventually be come the walls of the building's foundation. This required great strength and stamina, because each stone had to be lifted and carried to the spot in the wall where it would fit into a groove created by the other stones. A given stone might have to be lift ed many times, before finding a spot where it would fit perfectly. Many of the older homes still show the industrious artistry of construction of the generation before mine. (Send contributions to ikn column to THo OM Timor. So* «4V. Frankfort, Ky. 40*01.)
