X PAG€ 10-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MAY 17, 1972 ihrtng-tn Concept for Maternity Unit National Hospital Week is over„ but one of the good in novations initiated late last yetr by McHenry hospital' continues to be a favorite. It is one of tbe innovations discussed last week by Anthony Corcoran, administrator, when he talked about the hospital's desire to anticipate and keep ahead of patient needs. Besides such features as the patient representative and the outpatient surgery procedures, Corcoran said the hospital's leadership in developing a living-in concept for the maternity department is proving successful The rooming-in concept permits the mother to have the option of having her baby in the same room with her during the day between 3 a.m. and 10 p m These patients are in semi- private rooms and visiting hours have been expanded from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the husbands only for a certain number of hours and for one other visitor for two hours either in afternoon or evening Miss Victoria Behan, R.N , director of nursing service, says the rooming-in program has been chosen by more than half the mothers of new-born since the program was initiated late last eyar. "Husbands participate more in the first days of the new baby's joining the family, and the care of the baby becomes a family responsibility tfi the hospital. Both parents have a chance to hold and feed the baby and this lessens the ap prehension many new mothers have when going home to be all alone with their new child," said Miss Behan. "Mothers say they like the new concept and the work they use most to describe their feelings is that they enjoy it- the chance to be with their baby in the first few days for several hours " Goodwill To Visit Wonder Lake, McHenry The Goodwill Industries truck will be in McHenry and Wonder Lake Friday, May 26, to collect repairable clothing, shoes and housewares for the disabled trainees and em ployees at Goodwill, according to Mrs. Nick (Agnes) Adams local representative. For pickup arrangements, bags, club programs and in formation about Goodwill Industries, call Mrs. Adams. The handicapped people at Goodwill want their friends -to Teenagers Will March To Support Modlcal Research An army of teen-age volunteers under the direction of Lois Guerra, campaign director, is organizing to raise funds for reasearch directed toward eliminating childhood diseases. Lois will command a teen age volunteer corps as teen agers' march chairman. She know they appreciate donations of usable clothing, shoes and housewares, which have helped the disabled people to help themselves. Repairing these contributed articles for resale has provided and will produce income to make the Goodwill Industries program possible. This is a good time of the year to check the closets and basements for items no longer used or outgrown. Call Mrs. Adams Goodwill represen tative for pick-up arrangements and give tile hanotcapped workers a chance to earn and learn, not charity. They only ask for the gifts of a job during the coming months. All employees at Goodwill are paid wages and do not pay tuition. It takes over 2,000 barrels of material a year to serve one handicapped person annually. Our black kettle for heating water was within easy carrying distance from the pomp. A bench holding a tub and wash- stand stood under the shade of a maple tree near this source of water. This same bench served as a wash stand for the working men when they came in at meal time. The pump was a convenient spot for washing vegetables pick ed from the garden. Green beans, beets, radishes, lettuce, cucum bers, tomatoes - all spent a bit of time under the pump spout on their way to the kitchen table. Roasting ears could be shucked in tbe garden and rinsed at the pump before they entered the kitchen door. And who doesn't remember how cool fresh-pumped water could be in that day when few had ice cubes around? "Cool as a drink from the north corner of the well," was a familiar saying.
