LAKELAND PARK WATER "Dear Editor: "I would like to commend the McHenry Police department for its actions on behalf of the residents of Lakeland Park last Friday evening. "I had heard last Wednesday that the drinking water in Lakeland Park - was con taminated and needed to be boiled to be safe for drinking. As -three out of the four members of my family were suffering from abdominal cramps, I was very interested in finding out if this was true. When the Friday Plaindealer came out and there was no mention of any problem, I thought that it must be a rumor. "At ^3 o'clock Friday af ternoon I called the McHenry County Board of Health and at thatftime no one had an answer. At 4:30 Mr. McDonnell called me and verified that the water was contaminated. I asked what steps were being taken to inform the public. He said that he had no authority to make a release to the public. He said Mr. Wissell, the administrator, was out of the office and the weekend was coming up. I then called McHenry city hall ( now about 4:45) and asked for Earl Walsh. He was not there. I asked if anyone was there. No one was in the office. I was given another office number for Mr. Walsh, but there was no answer there either. So I decided to call the police. At approximately 4:50 I called the McHenry Police department and they knew nothing of the situation. They promised to check it out and take whatever immediate action was indicated. By 5:20 squads were in Lakeland Park announcing to the residents the situation and what to do about it. At 6 o'clock an officer was in my home taking a written statement from me about the sequence of events. "Lakeland Park is a part of the city of McHenry, but it gets (and pays for) its water from the Ladd company. Rumors have been flying around about the water all week. There are too many discrepancies in the statements made by Alderman Jerry Rogers for me to ac curately relay his role. I per sonally do not know Mr. Rogers, but he called me Friday evening to reassure me that the city cares. I did not completely understand his position, but he promised that he would do everything he could to find out what happened and get back to me in a few days. "I called Fred Meyer, city superintendent of public works, Friday evening also. He said that Mr. McDonnell called him about 5:30 and that he then called the police and told them to go out. May I remind you that the police were already in Lakeland Park by 5:20. Mr. Meyer also promised me he would do everything he could to find out what happened. When asked if he felt there was an unneccessary delay in notifying PAGE 15-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1972 the public he said 'no, but I r ~ - • can't swear to this.' "There also seems to be a discrepancy in what time the test results came back. Mr. Wissell says they came back at 4. He was out of the office at this time. According to Mr. Wissell, Mr. McDonnell finally found him at approximately 4:45. At this time he gave Mr. McDonnell, authority to notify the McHenry Police depart ment and have them make the announcement. When asked if he felt there was an un neccessary delay in notifying the public, he said 'no.' It was\ Saturday morning when l\ talked to Mr Wissell and he assured me that the water was now o.k. Police had also an nounced this in Lakeland Park. According to him, the Ladd water people came out Friday evening and drained the lines and added chlorine which took care of the problem. "I am not an expert in water purification, but I do know that theoretically that should work for bacteria. But I ask, how much chlorine? How often should it be added? What about the water laying in the lines? How long does it take the chlorinated water to flush out all the bacteria that is in the lines? Since the sulphur level was also too high, what was done about that? Does high sulphur cause cramps? And, most especially, how can you assume 'it is safe without retesting it? "The McHenry Police Department told me that there would be an investigation made by the County Board of Health, Ladd's company, the city of McHenry and the En vironmental Protection agency of Springfield. I sincerely hope there will be an investigation and that the public will be made aware of the results. "The question still remains, 'Why did it take a private citizen to get action going to inform people of a public health hazard?' "Sincerely, "Karen Marino '5221 W. Shorehill drive •"McHenry" MASKED SNOOPER - Snoopy Raccoon was an inquisitive visitor in several classrooms at Edgebrook school recently. Snoopy's antics delighted the children, and the animal acted as though he thought school was "cool", too. Snoopy demonstrated his fondness for his favorite people food, fruit loops, by eating a big pocketful from the hands of his adopted caretakers, Jamie and Kenneth Kirk. Snoopy and four of his brothers and sisters were orphaned as babies. Snoopy is making his home temporarily with Jamie and Kenneth until he is able to care for himself safely in his natural environment. In the meantime, Jamie and Kenneth are taking loving care of their animal friend, since they promised that he would be set free when he is mature. He was rescued from a chimney by a game warden and given to the family to raise. SERVICE NEWS suburban Kankakee church for the past five years.
