He did so much for so many (including yours truly) that heaven must have a place reserved for him. A good man and a good friend has been taken. His kind are never really replaced. The sports world mourns the death of "Gabby" Hartnett, great catcher for the Chicago Cubs inyearsgone by. He was a great ball player and colorful as they come. We sat in Wrigley Field one day during fielding practice when "Gabby" put on a great show for the crowd. The bat boy sat on second base, held up his glove and "Gabby" fired the ball-a bullseye! The crowd thought it was an accident so shouted "Do it again." And, he did! That was like "Dizzy" Dean calling in his outfielders, then striking out the side. As Georgie Gobel would say, "You don't hardly see those kind no more." Christmas seems to bring out the best in people. It is great to walk down the street and greet people. They are busy and maybe tired, but "Merry Christmas" seems to come from the heart. Most people have problems. Some have sadness. But, it is the time to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus. In the Wheeling meet the 200 yd., Medley Relay team composed of Topp, Sek, Koerber, and White took a first in the time of 1:54:7. Kevin Weiss broke his record in the 200 yd., freestyle and the 400 yd., freestyle. His time in the 200 was 2:01:7 and in the 440 4:30:4. Scott Topp won the 100 yd., backstroke in the time of 1:00:5 and Jon Sek won the 100 yd., breaststroke in the timejof 1:12:2. Bill Stahlman, who'is problems could be carried without drooping shoulders. Against Libertyville the same 200yd., relay team won in the time of 1:56:0. Weiss won the200 yd., freestyle in the time of 2:06:6 and the 100 yd., but­ terfly in the record time of 58.9. Scott Topp won his specialty the 100 yd., backstroke in 59:6. Randy Watkins won the 100 yd., freestyle in 57:5 and the 400 yd., freestyle relay was won with Watkins, Topp, Fetzer and Weiss in the time of 3:52:4. This young team is doing a fine job. Lack of experience, and a lack of depth is hurting the team. They can win events, but in meets it's the second and thirds that count up the points. In their specialty, some of these boys are state caliber. Don't sell them short. With a little more experience and the continued improvement, we are going to have a fine swimming team at McHenry high school. Warriors Kankakee By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig will take his "Fighting Warriors" to the tough 16 team Kankakee holiday tournament. The Warriors play on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. against Cret^1 Monee. If they should win their opening game they will play again on Thursday night at 9 against the winner of the Kankakee Eastridge-Joliet East game. If they lose their opener they would play the loser of ithe Kankakee, Joliet game at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28. The Warriors are foregoing the Batavia tournament where they have played for the past several years to enter this tough tournament. Kankakee hosts one of the better holiday tournaments. Their sessions are well attended. It would be nice if we could get a lot of Shanahan Swimmers 4th In East Aurora Invitational Meet By Dick Rabbitt Coach Mike Shanahan's swimmers placed fourth in the East Aurora Invitational meet last Saturday afternoon. Morton West won the meet, with Downers Grove South and Bremen placing second and third. Eleven schools were entered in the meet. Because of the competition in this meet Coach Shanahan and his squad should feel pleased with their showing. McHenry results were as follows: The 200 yd., Medley Relay team of Scott Topp, Jon Sek, Grapplers Defeated By Libertyville 39-6 BILL DAY Bill Day is the head football coach and assistant track coach. He and his wife, Cindy, have three daughters, Karen 14, Kristy 13, and Kathy 10. His home town is Brookfield, 111. Bill attended LaGrange high school where he lettered in track. He attended Coe college and was a miler on the track team. He has his Master's degree from the University of Iowa. He coached 5 years at Woodland in Streator, 111., and 5 years at Batavia. This is Bill's sixth year at McHenry. His football teams have won 76 lost 50 and tied 4. Bill has had the pleasure of seeing two of his former athletes star in the professional ranks. By Dick Rabbitt Coach Paul Palmateer's Wrestling Warriors ran into a buzz saw Friday evening and were defeated by the Liber­ tyville Wildcats by a score of 39 to 6. Only Mike Morreale and Mike Thornton were able to win victories for the Warriors. Next Friday and Saturday the Warriors are entered in the Harvard 16 team tourney. The J.V. squad lost a thriller 25 to 24. Big Lakers Deal 83-70 Loss To Scots Of McHenry County Kevin Weiss, and Randy Watkins placed second. Kevin Weiss won a first in the 100 yd., butterfly, and came back with a fourth in the 200 yd., freestyle. Scott Topp took a second in the 100 yd., backstroke. Jon Sek took fifth in the 200 yd., in­ dividual medley, and a third in the 100 yd., breaststroke. Randy Watkins placed fourth in both the 50 yd., freestyle, and the 100 yd., freestyle. Congratulations are in order to this squad for a job well done. College of Lake County dealt the McHenry County College cagers an 83 to 70 defeat this past Saturday evening. The defeat will be the last in 1972 as McHenry's Scots now take a break till Jan. 3, when they engage Mayfair of Chicago, attempting to break their losing streak. * The big Lakers took little time establishing the fact that they were going to dominate the game as they jumped to an early 16 to 6 lead on several jump shots and rebound shots from short range. The "B" teams played first and McHenry easily defeated Barrington by winning the first two games of the match. The "A" teams came onto the court and McHenry won the first and third games of a very well played and exciting match. This was the first Volleyball Sportsday hosted by McHenry. On Thursday, Dec. 14, McHenry's teams travelled to Marengo to participate in their final match of the year. Our "A" team played first and was defeated by the Marengo team although our "A" team played a very im­ pressive game.
