PAGE • - MCHENRY PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13,1974 f w rARK SCORES TWO - Tom Stark scored on this shot from the throw lane in Friday night's contest against Woodstock. After game in the first half, McHenry won going away by 81-46 as Coach Ken Ludwig used every player on his bench. On Friday night, the Warriors edged out Crystal Lake 71-69. arriots Edge Tigeis 71-69, nunce Blue Streaks 81-46 TOMASELLO'S Thurs., Night Women's League K. Bradley - 495-209; D. Mortell - 463; L. Ny Dick Rabbitt [Coach Ken Ludwig's JcHenry high Warriors added ?o more wins over the Weekend to bring their record 10 wins and 8 defeats. On night they edged the Lake Tigers in the j seconds by a score of 71 and on Saturday they had ^Cakewalk against the [oodstock Blue Streaks 81 to linst the Tigers the {arriors had all they could indie. Not only the Fieldhouse :faced the Warriors, but the igers who have lost 4 games by a total of 11 points put up the Qght of their lives against the heavily favored McHenry five. y, The Warriors started out against Crystal Lake about as cold as the weather outside. Tom Stark's two free throws were the only points the Warriors could put on the board i£ the first three minutes. The Warriors continued their struggle and trailed at' the (Juarter 15 to 11. In the second period young Steve Koerber, Who in my opinion is developing into a great ball player, scored 9of his 11 points and kept the Warriors in the game as they led at halftime 33 to 31. Crystal Lake shot out like a cannon during **?<> opening ORNAMENTAL IRON Railings-Columns- Custom Fabricating WelcHng & Structural Frozen Pipe Thawing STEEL SALES ADAMS BROS. (Next to Gem Cleaners) 3006 W. Rte. 120 Phone: McHenry 385-0783 minutes of the third period as the Warriors again hit a cold spell. Trailing 39 to 35 Him- pelmann and Koerber hit for baskets that tied the score at 4:30 to go in the period. With Stark and Himpelmann, - along with Wanta's bucket and one more from Camasta put the Warriors ahead 52 to 50 going into the final period.*4"^ The fourth quarter seemed unreal. The Tigers bounced back and took what seemed to be a commanding lead 65 to 59 with 2:30 remaining. Camasta's 20 footer closed the gap to 65 to 61. Himpelmann's free throw, and Zeller's left handed hook made it 65 to 64. Trailing 69 to 66 with 40 seconds left on the clock, Steve Buss's second effort on a rebound shot made it 69 to 68. Crystal Lake thai proceeded to lose the ball, and again "Bussy" flipped in a 15 footer to put the Warriors ahead 70 to 69. Himpelmann's free throw with a 4 seconds left secured the Warrior win 71 to 69. It was a must win for 4ur Warriors. Libertyville's loss to- Zion left only Zion and Dundee at the top of the heap of the North Suburban, with our Warriors still in the running only one game behind with 4 to play. It was a nice victory for the Warriors. The fieldhouse has been a jinx for years. Him pelmann found his eye again and hit for 26 points. Tom Stark had 14, and because of foul trouble played only about a half. Steve Koerber looks better every time out. Bussy played his usual aggressive game, and Zeller and Camasta did a fine job in relief. TROUNCESTREAKS On Saturday night the Warriors hosted the Blue Streaks from Woodstock. The Streaks started out like it was going to be their night as they raced off to a quick 4 to 0 lead. They increased it 12 to 5, but the Warriors fought back and trailed 12 to 11 at the quarter. From this point on it was just a matter of how high the Warriors would go, and if Coach Ken Ludwig* s Warriors would pour it on the hapless Streaks. McHenry led 33 to 26 at the half, and increased it to 57- 33 going into the final period. Plaving 15 and 13 of them in the scoring column, Coach Ludwig took pity on the Streaks and won going away 81 to 46. The Warriors looked good over the weekend. Their play has improved quite a bit. In the Crystal Lake game they had only 3 turnovers in the second half. In the Woodstock game they had only a total of 7 tur novers for the entire game. There - is more balanced scoring. Himpelmann led die sewers in both games, but Stark, Koerber and the rest are picking up. Roger Wanta although only scoring 2 baskets in the Woodstock game, really went to the boards, and if the big senior can continue this fine play, it will be a great help to the Warriors going down to the wire. With 4 games to go in the conference race, the Warriors are not out of it by all means. Zion has to play North Chicago, and Libertyville again, and both will be gunning for revenge. The Warriors have another tough doublfeheader this weekend. On Friday Barrington will come to town, and on Saturday they travel to play the first place Dundee Cardunals, whom they defeated earlier in the year. Can't drive too far with this gasoline shortage, but during a short ride Sunday saw snowmobiles, all over the countryside. Those snowmobilers are the only ones not anxious for an early spring. Before we forget. Get your White Sox car stickers from Bill DeVries. A card from California from a Bimbo gang, Julia and Junior Pieroni, Ted and Irene McNish, Fred and Phyliss Mathesius, says they are visiting the Senior Roy Thompsons. They say "Wish you were here. That crowd should add action to the California scene. Steve Buss, a fine defensive guard and playmaker, didn't score a point at Crystal Lake until the chips were down Friday night. Then he put in two last minute baskets in a 71- 69 victory. Sounds like his Dad in a golf match. TIME OUT - Had to listen to the Lawrence Welk show. It was, wunnerful! A lot of people complain about the snow plows filling up their driveways and want the drivers to lift the blade at every drive. We can picture a city with the greatest roller coaster since Riverview Park. One thing the people in this country have learned is not to put any choice conversations on tape. Feb. 8,1974 Dear Earl: I don't think I will ever have an epitaph written for me BUT if I do, hope you will get the job! You always manage to send the old 4uns off with a pat and a smile. In re Annie Frisby, I too was a paying guest in her home when I was attending McHenry High. She ran a tight ship - no shenanigans, but she was a heckuva cook! I loved her Mother who aided and abetted me in some of my devious adventures. Looking back on those years, I think I had the best food in McHenry, thanks to Mrs. "Deke" Wentworth, Maggie McCarty and Annie Frisby -1 lived with all of them at one time CM- another --1 think my Grandfather paid the princely sum of $7.50 a week for me. I will never forget those 3 ole gals - God rest their souls! Regards, Aileen O'Reilly (Gillespie) Dear Aileen: Nice to hear from you. "Your letter made me think a bit more about those beloved Old Timers who leave us. Have decided we never know how much we love them until they are taken from us. Realization does something to a fellow. Write again - "S.I.H." We used to say it took half the population to check on the other half. Now that everybody is suspect, the percentage must be higher. Who is going to check on the checkeruppers? Like who's taking care of the caretaker's daughter while the caretaker's busy taking care? Hersey Defeats Varsity Tankers, Sophomores Win Injuries and illness plagued Coach Mike Shanahan's McHenry High Swimming team as they were defeated by Hersey High School by a score of 108 to 58. Scott Topp won his specialty the 100 yd backstroke for the only Warrior win. Hie sophomores in one of their rare appearances soundly trounced the Hersey sophs by a score of 104 to 62. Lowell Kively won the diving event with a score of 162.4 which is a pretty §ood score for a sophomore» iver. Tonight the swimmers host Woodstock and on Thursday they Dlav host to Libertyville. After a fairly close first half, McHenry started stealing the ball and using a fast break and went on to win 81-46. Himpelmann was high scorer with 18 points. Sophs Split Weekend Games Coach Gary Collins' McHenry sophomores split a pair of games over the weekend. On Friday they lost a heartbreaker to Crystal Lake 47 to 45, and on Saturday they easily defeated Woodstock 67 to 53.
