PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 8, Academy Grant Wins 65 to 59 Over Warrior Five In Regionpi Game TOM STARK (42) led the Warriors in scoring with 19 points, followed by Himpelmann with 17 and Buss with 11. They tallied for 47 of the Warriors 59 points, but it was not enough as Grant won 65-59 to eliminate McHenry from the regional tourney. Warriors Mike Cajthaml (40) and Marty Zeller (54) look on as Stark scores a 2 pointer. (STAFF PHOTO- WAYNE GAYLORD) By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High Warriors season came to an end Wedn esday night, when the Grant Bulldogs eliminated them from regional play 65 to 59. Grant will play Antioch tonight for the regional championship. Game time is 7:30 at West Campus. The game started off slow. Neither team could get an attack going during, the early part of the quarter. Midway in the period Grant led 8 to 4. Both teams, it seemed, had tour nament jitters. Numerous turnovers took place. &rant led at the end of the period 12 to 6. It "was during the second period when the Warriors probably lost the game. They just couldn't seem to buy a basket. Grant increased its lead gradually until they had an 18 point bulge at halftime, 33 to 15. With 15 seconds remaining in the period Steve Koerber, Warrior center, picked up his fourth personal foul. During the third period the Warriors picked up, and displayed a little more hustle, and they narrowed the gap to 43 to 31 going into the final quarter. With the ever faithful cheering section urging them on, the Warriors hit a hot streak Fisherman Jorgenson Wins "Best In State" In Minnesota Event will be annouunced later this month. The first half was all Grant as they left for the dressing room with a 33-15 lead. The home team didn't look too good at that point. Close attention to Steve Himpelmann held him to one point in the first half. As shown against Liber- tyville and Dundee, when Steve doesn't score the team is doomed. The Grant team was plenty big and rugged. We'd like to have No. 33 (Bruce Kemenetz) on our team. He sank side shots like Sib Whiting used to in his day (that's a spell back down the road). • Our Warriors lived up to their name in the last half as subs came in to help the cause. At one time it looked like they might pull one out of the fire. That's the end of the trail for the '73-'74 Warriors. They gave us all they had. It just wasn't enough in some games. Credit them with never giving up the fight. After watching high school, college and pro games, we wonder how it would work some time if the coaches and refs traded places for a whole game. Dear Earl: How come the White Sox people have not signed up Fred Antioch Easily Defeats Blue Streaks 81-49 By Dick Rabbitt Top seeded Antioch won their first game of the McHenry Regional when they easily defeated Woodstock 81 to 49 on Tuesday. Woodstock started out the game with a ball control type of offense. Midway in the first period they led Antioch 4 to 2. Then the roof caved in on the Streaks. Antioch ran off 17 straight points in the final 4 minutes of the quarter to lead 19 to 4. The Sequoits ran off 9 more straight points in the early stages of the second period before the Streaks could come up with a basket. During this shooting streak, Antioch ran up 26 straight points while holding the Streaks scoreless. The Sequoits led at halftime 45 to 20. Flintstone and Barney Rubble? All from here. Loren Thomas Now you tell us, Tommy, after the Cubs have them signed. In the early stages of the third period the Streaks began to hit the basket, and managed at the 2:30 mark to bring the score to a respectable 51-32. However, they again hit a cold spell, and trailed at the end of the third period 59 to 38. In the fourth period the Sequoits managed to outscore the Streaks 22 to 11, with both team reserves playing the final 4 minutes. Both teams had numerous turnovers. Antioch had all 5 starters in double figures with Albano leading, the pack with 23. Bo Palenske led the Streaks with 12. The win puts Antioch in the Friday night Championship game.
