You can use heavy roll roofing or sheets of exterior plywood for a temporary floor, but a little dirt in the fertilizer spreader could be better than a chunk of roofing or a splinter of plywood. WAIT TO APPLY UREA It is still too early to apply ureas as nitrogen fertilizer for corn. At current prices, losses due to volatilization 'm»j*-?, outweigh any time advantage gained from the early ap plication. The best time to apply urea is just before disking. It can then be in corporated into the soil to reduce volatilization losses. This year, however, may be an exception. Possible shortages of nitrogen fertilizer may in fluence purchasing dates. If a supply of urea is available now that may not be available later, you may want to buy and store it. Don't apply it now unless storage is impossible. CORN PLANTING Plant corn early if you can prepare a good seedbed and if the soil temperature is favorable says McHenry County Cooperative Extension Service. We recommend planting 10 percent of your corn three weeks before the normal planting date for your area and 25 percent two weeks before that date. The normal corn planting date for farmers in McHenry county is May 10. But planting your crop before this date of fers several advantages. Here are six reasons for planting early: 1. When you intentionally delay planting after soil con ditions are right, you've lost control of your planting date. Wet weather can set in and keep you out of the field far beyond the optimum date. Or the seedbed can dry out so seed will not germinate. 2. The optimum planting date is slightly earlier than date-of- planting studies indicate because the studies don't take into account plant populations. Early planting allows a few thousand additional plants per acre. Farmers can often harvest a greater yield with earlier planting than research trials indicate. 3. The t average yield reduction from planting ten days too early is less than from planting ten days too late. 4. Having some early planted corn spreads the risk of un favorable weather interfering Legal Notice IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE 19TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT, McHENRY COUNTY, ILLINOIS PROBATE DIVISION ESTATE OF Helen Brooks Deceased, FILE NO. 74-P-71 Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 194 of the Probate Act, of the death of the above named decedent and that letters of Administration were issued on March 4, 1974. to Helen C. Schlaeger, 4406 Ashley Drive, McHenry, Illinois, whose attorney of record is Zukowski, Zukowski, Poper & Rogers, 50 Virginia St., Crystal Lake, Illinois. Claims may be filed within 6 months from the date of issuance of Letters and that any claim not filed within that period is barred as to the estate which is inventoried within that period. ' Claims against said estate should be filed in the Probate office of the Clerk of said Court, County Court House, Wood stock, Illinois, and copies thereof mailed or delivered to said legal representative and to said attorney. The earlier that corn is ready for harvesting in the fall, the better chances of field drying and of avoiding field losses from bad weather or stalk breakage. 6. There is often a slight price advantage for early harvested corn in the fall. Wet, cold soil can give you'a poor stand. Weed problems can occur when soil is too wet for timely cultivation. And frost can injure corn plants. The weed problem can be offset by the proper choice of a good preemergence herbicide. And the threat of frost damage is exaggerated, says McHenry County Cooperative Extension Service.
