Joan Laane of Bay View Postal Customers Locally Are Among Best Zip Code Users Postmaster Leroy Smith has expressed gratitude to postal customers in the McHenry postal area for their regular use of the zip code with mailing addresses. "Customers in the thirteen state central region in which McHenry is a part, leads the other four postal regions with an 89.1 percent zip code usage. According to recent figures, the national average for zip code usage by mailers reached 87.3 percent," Postmaster Smith continued. 4 Smith said the success of the zip code is well established. Its public acceptance has come a long way from that first day nearly eleven years ago when the program was launched in Washington with a special Ethel Merman version of "Zip- A-Dee Doo-Dah" mat was to be heard in thousands -of promotional spots on radio and television around the country. It was July 1, 1963, that the postal system's zoning im provement program went into effect. There was an immediate furor over the advent of zip coding, but the people who predicted dire things for the Lane, McHenry, is among fourteen university of Illinois seniors who have been designated Woodrow Wilson Fellows for first year graduate study next fall. Joan is a chemistry major. Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. May have returned from a Nassau Cruise. Their ship docked in the center of downtown4 Nassau adjacent to the famed Straw market. future of the U.S. mail as a result of adding five figures to an address have long since been proven wrong, Smith observed. "Fortunately, there were those who also recognized that a growing population, a more mobile life style, and a growing volume of mail (it was 30 billion pieces in 1942,49 billion in 1952, 67 billion in 1962, and now 90 Hbillion) would require an addressing system more sophisticated than the one that had been used for the previous years", Smith said. He noted that fears that the zip code would speed the demise of the identity of American place names have proved groundless. "Ju&t look through the current directory of post offices, and you'll find the continuing exigence of such places as Alpha, Illinois; Gas, Kansas; Weeping Water, Nebraska; Zap, North Dakota; M c H e n r y , K e n t u c k y ; M c H e n r y , M a r y l a n d ; M c H e n r y , M i s s i s s i p p i ; McHenry, North Dakota; McHenry Village, S. Modestal, California; Tea, South Dakota; and Luck, Wisconsin," he said. "None has been endangered by the addition of the five-digit zip code as part of its mailing address. On the contrary, the residents of these places - as well as those who live in the most congested part of any metropolis -- now can be located more quickly, more accurately, and at less cost than would be possible without the mechanized applications of zip coding." Much of the world's troubles come about because people have never made up their minds NOT to steal, lie, rob, drink, and gamble.
